Rohan Dennis parlayed his strong second place in the prologue, as well as nabbing intermediate sprint bonus seconds, into the overall lead when he won the third stage of the Tour of Alberta!
Dennis rode smartly early in the stage which was predicted to be affected by strong cross winds. Sure enough straight away the field shattered into groups.
“It was the hardest stage so far,” said Dennis. “The cross wind from 5km when we turned right, it split it to bits. From there it was a time trial for 160 km for the rest of the race.”
Even though Dennis, the best young rider jersey, was solo in the front group of 18 and against multiples from other teams, he rode with his head on a swivel to not allow himself to get caught out.
“It was a little bit of worry for a second because Brookwalter is fairly close to me, so is [Gretsch.] I had to worry about them jumping me or even them sitting on.”
“In the end we came to the conclusion that we had to work together to stay away.”
Dennis showed his sprinting potential by grabbing more bonus seconds in the lone intermediate sprint. Coming into the final kilometer Dennis was second wheel but was forced to lead out from 300 meters. But his strong sprint was too much for the rest of the break.
The result gives him the overall lead of the race by 11 seconds over Brookwalter and 18 over Gretsch.
“I really came here to get a result in the prologue and then fly by ear. But once we got the break going things started to play in my head that it could turn out to be the yellow jersey, or even just the white jersey stitched up.”
“It’s great to wear the yellow in the first ever Tour of Alberta!”
