Team Garmin-Transitions’ Robbie Hunter successfully defended his race lead at the Vuelta a Murcia with another field sprint win. Our director sportif on the ground, Johnny Weltz, gives the summary:

At the start of the second stage — with the leader’s jersey on and a hard stage ahead — we decided to be part of the attacks instead of defend. Right from start attacks went with the first serious attack going after five kilometers. We had Peter Stetina in it. Another ten riders joined and Danny Pate was in there too, making 22 riders up the road in total.

They gained up to one-and-a-half minutes, then some teams with no representation started to work. It came to a long chase and finally came back together after 30 km. Then another group went and again we had Danny with Trent Lowe up there until Trent flatted out of the group. The group was going strong and it reduced down to a ten man group over the mountain, with Danny the best rider on GC.

Sky took charge and had a long day at the office doing the chasing. It all came back together over the mountain the final time. One rider got clear with 40 km to go but our guys took charge of keeping the whole thing under control and to set up the sprint finish for Robbie. He delivered a perfect sprint and not only won the stage but also defended the jersey and took the green jersey as well! Very strong teamwork today.

We were positioned in eleventh place before the start of today’s final city circuit in downtown Adelaide. But we were really looking at getting Robbie Hunter into the top ten to obtain valuable Pro Tour points.

Eleventh place would not give us anything.

The plan was to gain bonus seconds in the two bonus sprints but that was the hard part — keeping the bunch together for the two sprints on a very fast city circuit. We managed to do that and Robbie finished second in both sprints moving up to ninth place and gaining the Pro Tour points. In the final Trent Lowe went clear with two others after the last bonus sprint and the three escapes were only caught on the last lap of the race.

The team rode again very well on today’s stage and throughout the tour and was voted by all as the most aggressive team of Tour Down Under!

Director’s report from Matt White:

Well so far the Tour of Britain has been quite successful with Chris Sutton winning stage 1, then third on Stage 3 and today second on the stage. The team has ridden very well in supporting CJ.

Kai Reus still leads ahead of Boasen-Haagen at one second and CJ at five seconds. The big teams like us and Rabobank have been controlling the race — but with Wiggo choosing not to start tomorrow’s stage and us already loosing Ricardo from a crash on day 1, it will be very hard to control with only four riders left.

Trent is riding quite well after a big break from competition. Tom Peterson is solid but not quite firing on all cylinders. Cj is moving well — this is the level of sprinting for him.

In response to David Millar’s injury update, many of you have inquired about the status of the rest of the injured Argyle Armada, including the status of Tyler Farrar following his crash Saturday at Milan-San Remo. Below is the injury update from the team’s doctor, Prentice Steffen:

Tyler Farrar injured his shoulder, but he had a x-ray Sunday morning and it is not a broken collarbone. More to come as he sees a shoulder specialist.

Steven Cozza has patellar tendonitis, a common early season problem and it is resolving.

Saturday I did 4 hours and Sunday another 4 hours with some efforts — no pain in either of them. Monday I’ll do another 4-plus hour ride with a bit more effort. The knees are improving, and I’ll be ready for any race you throw at me!

Dan Martin has a vague virus making him tired; the mono test was negative and all blood work fine.

Its been a strange period… basically been sleeping. A lot! It’s strange waking up after 13 hors in bed and still feeling tired. I had no energy for about 10 days. I rode for between 1 and 2 hours really easy every other day, just to keep the legs turning, get some fresh air and see if my body was ready to wake up yet basically.
Then it happened! I woke up Saturday feel great — full of energy and good legs on the bike. I still have to be cautious for a few days but fingers crossed I’m out the other side and can start to think about getting back on the grid at Pays Basque.

Martijn Maaskant had a bad laceration from a crash, but it is healing well last I heard.

Martijn Maaskant going off-road in Tirreno-Adriatico, stage 1.

Trent Lowe is fine as far as I know.

Race summary from director Lionel Marie

Bonjour Garmin-Slipstream fans:

The team did a good job this week! We were disappointed after the prologue on Sunday — Brad did a good job before and during the race but Contador was stronger.

Christian was better day after day and his win was very important for all of the team. I am sure you all saw the win on the TV!

David crashed but was very focused, and it’s a good sign for the next race. Trent finished with better form than he started, so we will see in three weeks what that means for him; and Danny was always ready to bring bottles and did all the work you can’t see on TV!

It was a nice surprise with Tom Peterson… this guy is strong! He needs some time to learn more but with our captain that will be no problem.

In conclusion, our team did a very good job and it’s a good preview for the rest of our season’s objectives here in Europe. Paris-Nice and Tirreno gave us a good start so FOLLOW THE LEADER, GARMIN-SLIPSTREAM!!

Team Garmin-Slipstream’s Tom Peterson and Trent Lowe made the most of the final stage of Paris-Nice, both making it into the early breakaway just 25 km into the stage. In the finale Christian Vande Velde finished high in thirteenth place, moving him far up the final general classification into 25th. As well, Peterson’s finish moved him up to 28th overall and sixth in the best young rider classification.

But bad luck continued to play a factor in the team’s numbers, as the team’s other GC contender David Millar withdrew from the race after a crash. “In the first kilometer of the climb, where the attacks went, I was placing myself at the front with VDV,” Millar said. “A rider came flying round my outside turning into the switchback and crossing right into my path. His rear skewer jammed into my wheel with such force it locked it up immediately and catapulted me over the handlebars. I landed on my head and right shoulder with all my weight at speed, breaking my helmet at buckling my shoulder.”

“I thought I’d broken something as I have very rarely had such a heavy impact crash. It looked so bad Christian almost stopped. Prentice was in the second car and we looked at quickly on the spot and decided that the ambulance wasn’t required. I climbed in the car and we followed Trent to the finish. On arrival at the bus both Prentice and Matt looked at it properly and have come to the initial conclusion that it’s an AC sprain. I’m gonna get an MRI tomorrow and will know the degree of it afterwards. It’s big and swollen and hurts and I’m sad as I don’t want to miss out on Milan San Remo or Criterium International!”

With 70 kph cross-tailwind for the majority of the day, it was go from the gun.

The action started very early when last year’s winner André Greipel hit a motorbike in the crosswind in the first 20 km. The crash created the first and most dangerous split of the day with 16 riders–including Lance Armstrong along with Stuart O’Grady and Michael Rogers (both former winners of the event).

We missed the split along with many other teams, but noticeably Rabobank and Quick Step. So the boys went on the chase only to have it upset by another mass pile up. Then it was down to a group of 30 chasing 14. But with Quick Step losing riders, it was up to us and Rabo to chase. Our four of Trent, Christian (below), Ryder (below) and Cameron with his dislocated shoulder chased like men possessed for 50 km, reeling in the star-studded break inside the last 25 km.

No sooner had the break been caught when Cam (above) went of the front with a Lotto rider. After winning the last KOM of the day, Cam left his partner and set sail for home only getting caught by the splintered chase group at 6 km to go.

An incredibly gutsy ride from our new recruit considering the pain he was in. He was justifiably awarded the Most Aggressive ride of the day.

“I’m blown away after seeing the setup they’ve got here. The race village, the hotel and the setup for accreditation,” Trent said. “I haven’t done it before so I’m not sure if it’s like this every year, but I feel more like I’m at the Australian Open tennis more than a cycling event. We have the big tent that’s like our base, and it’s got everything we need in addition to being air-conditioned. It’s like the green room for cycling.”

We ordered some of the new bottles and I have most of the kit and even one of Lucas’s gloves. I thought it would be fun to carry a Garmin-Chipotle musette bag to collect candy in. I won’t eat much candy because I’m going to be a climber.
