Race report: Young guns in the hunt at Murcia

Tough racing on the queen stage of the Vuelta a Murcia, but the Argyle Armada’s young guns proved up to the challenge, as director sportif Johnny Weltz reports:

The queen stage of the race to Alhama de Murcia — with this stage and the TT tomorrow there was no doubt that to keep up with the hope of winning the GC we had to be over the top in the front group. Already in the morning we knew we would lose the leader’s jersey as Robbie Hunter was going home to his wife who is about to have their second child.

The day started fast with several attacks, but today no big group got away — only four riders after 15 km. The peloton let them have eight minutes before we started to control it.

We got some help from two other teams and had a hold of things. Trent Lowe did a great job.

So coming into the last climb, a 1 cat climb, it was almost together. Near the top it shattered and Danny Pate was dropped with 3 km to go and Dave Z just 2 km before the top — our two GC guys. So we had to count on our two youngsters, Peter Stetina and Michel Kreder.

Michel finished eighth on the stage, and PEter finished in first group as well! If Michel had not flatted the first day he would have takne over the leader jersey! We’ll see tomorrow with a 22 km time trial.

Kreder wins best young rider – Haut Var, stage 2

Director’s report from Lionel Marie:

Today was a long 200km stage over all the climbs of this part of France.

It was finally sunny and no wind, but always a fast start and the leader’s team controled it until the last 100 kilometers — with the harder part of the stage still to come, timing the finish line with the last 300m at a 22% grade.

It was a good day for us with Michel Kreder in a good group at 120km to go and a good attack from Tom Danielson on the hors category climb at 20km to go.

In the end only 40 guys arrived for the victory with four for us — Danielson, Kreder, Stetina who continues to learn a lot and Peterson.

Michel was 12th of the stage and won young best rider overall!

Director’s report from Lionel Marie:

We missed the break of 13 today so some of our guys had to do the chasing with the other teams for 120 kilometers! Michael Kreder had a very good ride today finishing eighth and taking the best young rider jersey. But a hard day as it was a 42km/h average for the day!

Status quo in crazy stage – Tour of Mediterraneen, stage 4

With the shortening of the fourth stage of the Tour of Mediterraneen the GC and other classifications remain the same, including Dan Martin in the KOM jersey and Michael Kreder in the best young rider’s jersey.
