Race Report: Vuelta a Murcia Time Trial

Team Garmin-Transitions’ US time trial champion David Zabriskie turned in a top-ten TT performance at the Vuelta a Murcia, while young neo-pro rode into a top 25 position on the overall. Director sportive Johnny Weltz reports:

The time trial stage was looked to by everyone as the judge of this year’s Vuelta a Murcia. And indeed it was, but not with one of the riders everybody expected. We had Zabriskie as our big TT specialist, although he is still a bit from his top shape. Still he managed a top ten in tough company. Danny Pate and Peter Stetina also had a decent TT, and Peter sits in the top 25 of the general classification.

Race report: Hunter doubles – Vuelta a Murcia, stage 2

Team Garmin-Transitions’ Robbie Hunter successfully defended his race lead at the Vuelta a Murcia with another field sprint win. Our director sportif on the ground, Johnny Weltz, gives the summary:

At the start of the second stage — with the leader’s jersey on and a hard stage ahead — we decided to be part of the attacks instead of defend. Right from start attacks went with the first serious attack going after five kilometers. We had Peter Stetina in it. Another ten riders joined and Danny Pate was in there too, making 22 riders up the road in total.

They gained up to one-and-a-half minutes, then some teams with no representation started to work. It came to a long chase and finally came back together after 30 km. Then another group went and again we had Danny with Trent Lowe up there until Trent flatted out of the group. The group was going strong and it reduced down to a ten man group over the mountain, with Danny the best rider on GC.

Sky took charge and had a long day at the office doing the chasing. It all came back together over the mountain the final time. One rider got clear with 40 km to go but our guys took charge of keeping the whole thing under control and to set up the sprint finish for Robbie. He delivered a perfect sprint and not only won the stage but also defended the jersey and took the green jersey as well! Very strong teamwork today.

Danielson finishes Burgos on final podium

After going 1-2 in the individual time trial, Team Garmin-Slipstream came into the final stage of the Vuelta a Burgos with the slimmest of leads in the overall, with Tom Danielson and Danny Pate sitting only seconds ahead of the field. On the final mountain-top finish the attacks were hard and unrelenting for Pate and Danielson, who fought valiantly. In the end, Danielson finished a strong fifth and secured a podium spot with third place.

Team Garmin-Slipstream took a major win Saturday with Tom Danielson and Danny Pate finishing first and second in the individual time trial of the Vuelta a Burgos in Spain. The also win puts both riders into the top two on GC and in position to claim the overall on Sunday final stage, a mountain-top finish to Lagunas de Neila.

“Today was a big test,” said Danielson. “I have been working relentlessly on my condition as well as my head. It is nice to see what happens when both come together. The course was very challenging as it was a power course with a lot of wind. This result shows that I am a complete rider and I am coming into form. I am very happy to say the least.”

“To be leading the race is also another bonus! However, right now I am just going to enjoy today and deal with tomorrow, manana. Thank you to everyone for your support and especially to my teammates for putting me in this position!”

Pate third on stage, with Dean in break – Giro, stage 18

Team Garmin-Slipstream’s Giro fortunes changed Thursday on stage 18 with Danny Pate and Julian Dean making it into the day’s main break that survived all the way to the finish line in Benevento. Pate, who was one of the most active on the day and instrumental in establishing the breakaway, rode hard to make the final selection of seven. He rode smartly inside the final kilometer, watching and marking the sprint, but coming up just short in the final meters and settling for third on the day.

“Now that I’ve had some time to think about it, I’m happy with third,” Pate said. “JD and I got in the break and after that, we couldn’t have done better tactically. It shows how well we’re working as a team, which is good for us here and for the rest of the season!”

Pate’s podium adds another near-win to the growing list for Team Garmin-Slipstream at the Giro.

As Team Garmin-Slipstream makes the final preparations for the 2009 Giro d’Italia campaign here in Lido di Jesolo, Italy, riders and directors take a look back at last year’s epic ride and ahead to tomorrow’s start:

Christian Vande Velde, the first American to wear the Maglia Rosa since 1988, says: “leading the team across the line in the TTT and wearing the pink jersey are great memories. Little was I to know at the time that it was going to be the hardest grand tours of my career! It laid the foundations for my fourth place at the Tour and for that reason I’m here again.”

Christian will be joined by one of the youngest riders – if not THE youngest rider – in the race: 21-year-old Cameron Meyer of Australia. The reigning points race world champion from Australia faces not only his first Grand Tour, but his first race in Europe this season: “I do not know what is going to happen over the coming weeks in this amazing bike race. I hope to learn as much as possible in this tour and gain experience while doing my best to help my teammates.”

The team’s veteran of Grand Tours, David Millar – recovering from a collarbone break – is eyeing the TTT: “I’m particularly looking forward to the team time trial. We’re very relaxed although extremely focused, a good combination! Beyond the TTT, I want to be able to get through the race without any problems, with the Dauphine and Tour remaining my primary objectives. As my fitness increases here I can work for the other guys in their quests for stage wins.”

Coming off a pre-Giro training camp, Christian is optimistic about the opening stage: “We’re ready for Saturday, secure in the work we’ve done and ability we have. Our training in Girona was better than ever before and I’m excited to see how that will translate on the road. I’ll be taking it day-by-day. My head is firmly in July, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be ready to seize the day given the opportunity here!”

The man in the car, director sportif Matt White, outlines the team’s goals: “Of course one of our goals is tomorrow’s TTT but we’ll be looking at sprint stages, too, and all the guys have the opportunity to roll the dice for individual glory. We are not here to ride for GC but with some of the core TDF squad here, we have a good opportunity to see how the team works around Christian.”

Bradley Wiggins – Five-time Olympic medalist and six-time world champion on the track, his two team pursuit world championships will be a key factor in a TTT success.

Danny Pate – The Pate’s skills on a time trial bike are well known, and his results at this year’s Critérium International (second-place on stage 2, third-place overall) show he is on form at the right time for an individual win as well.

David Zabriskie – The current US national time trial champion for the past two seasons, DZ’s red, white and blue argyle Pearl Izumi skinsuit will be easy to spot in echelon during the TTT.

Julian Dean – A two-time national champion on the track as well as the road for New Zealand, Dean will be a strong engine for the team and a solid lead-out for sprinter Tyler Farrar.

Tom Danielson – His numerous hill climb records, from Mt. Evans to Mt. Washington, mean that TD will be a threat for a mountain stage win.

Tyler Farrar – Farrar has been on the business-end of field sprints all season, beating the best-of-the-best in Tirreno-Adriatico and coming close on many other occasions. He will continue to be a favorite on any stage with a sprint finish.

Team Garmin-Slipstream announces Giro d'Italia start list

Team Garmin-Slipstream, defending Team Time Trial champion of the 2008 Giro d’Italia, today announced its much-anticipated line-up for the 2009 edition of the race.

Christian Vande Velde, the first American rider to wear the Maglia Rosa since 1988, will be joined by Bradley Wiggins, Cameron Meyer, Danny Pate, David Millar, David Zabriskie, Julian Dean, Tom Danielson and Tyler Farrar.

“We are bringing an incredible group of riders to the Giro d’Italia, and we have some big goals we want to achieve,” said Matt White, Director. “The team has been training hard for this race and we’d of course love to get the Maglia Rosa again, but we will be happy with a few strong performances.”

When asked about the difficulty of choosing the list, White added: “Narrowing down a Grand Tour list is always difficult, especially when guys like Ryder Hesjedal have been having a tremendous season. But we need to keep our goal of helping Christian at the Tour de France in mind, and preserving someone like Ryder now could be a huge benefit to us later.”

The team will look to defend last year’s Team Time Trial victory on Saturday.
