August 10, 2007 - Boulder, CO - Team Slipstream/Chipotle, dedicated to promoting ethical sporting and developing the next generation of cycling champions, officially announced that soon-to-be-retired Australian professional rider Matt White will be joining it’s ranks as one of the team’s European directors in 2008. White will join current Slipstream director Johnny Weltz in running the squad’s expanded European program.

White began his career in 1992 with the Australian National Team, and his most recent professional teams included US Postal Service, Cofidis, and Discovery Channel this past season. “It’s a hard decision to retire for any professional athlete, but my decision was made a lot easier when I was given the opportunity to be involved in the Slipstream/Chipotle program. Not only does the team have a great ethical strategy it has great mix of youth and experience on and off the bike, which will enable it to adapt quickly in becoming a force to be reckoned with in the world of cycling.”

White is excited to move in to the next phase of his cycling career as a director, explaining what he envisions bringing to the program in 08: “I hope to bring to Slipstream/Chipotle my love and enthusiasm for a sport that has given me so much. With 12 years in the pro peloton, I have worked for many great champions and seen firsthand when a team works dismally and also run like clockwork. The majority of our team is young and in the process of developing their strengths and skills in the super competitive world of European cycling. Being now surrounded now with teammates of the caliber of Millar, Zabriskie, Backstedt, Vande Velde and Dean, I know with proper leadership these young riders will thrive on the new challenges they will face.”

Just as exciting for White is the outlook Slipstream/Chipotle is bringing to the sport. “2008 is a very exiting year for fans also, having for the first time a real American team that is dedicated to clean and ethical sport, going head-to-head with Europe’s best - I am thrilled to be a part of this groundbreaking venture!”

Slipstream Sports President/CEO Jonathan Vaughters is excited about the team’s latest edition. According to Vaughters, “Matt has always been a witty and unique member of the peloton. I imagine that he’ll become an even more influential part of international cycling now that he’s in a leadership role.”

Magnus Backstedt has announced that he is the mysterious Paris-Roubaix winner signed by Jonathan Vaughters’ Team Slipstream for 2008. Vaughters’ announced to Cyclingnews last week that he had signed an active winner of the French classic, but refused to name which professional had signed with the squad.

“I feel that it is time for a new start and I am extremely attracted by the programme and values of Team Slipstream/Chipotle,” said Backstedt, reffering to the squad’s ethos of a doping-free environment. “Jonathan Vaughters and myself were team mates at Credit Agricole, as soon as I spoke with him regarding the possibility of me joining the team, I knew it was the right decision.”
