The varying terrain - not to mention the rain and crosswinds - of today’s individual time trial proved to be far more challenging than expected. The course included the Monte de Colbordolo (4.6 km long with 6.3% grade) and an uphill finish in Urbino on a cobbled hill with a 6% grade.

The opening prologue of the Volta a Catalunya was a fast, short 3.7 km time trial. The results of the race against the clock were slightly altered by late afternoon showers. The relatively young Argyle crew rode well against a stacked start list that included Fabian Cancellara, George Hincapie, and stage winner Thor Hushovd.

This 36 km individual time trial starts on the coast and moves inland and slightly upward to the finish in Urbino. According to Christian Vande Velde, who previewed the course today with David Millar, it will be a tough ride.

Despite an early breakaway, today’s slow stage (39.6 kph) ended in a mass sprint that saw “Kiwi Guy” Julian Dean (above) in good position. Dean finished 9th and seems to be coming back strong from a couple of hard crashes during stage 2.

While the Giro crew survived a fast, uneventful stage 8, the guys over in France lit things up a bit at Picardie. Early in the stage, Mike Friedman and Christophe Laurent (right from Criterium International) joined a break that eventually broke up, leaving Christophe to defend the Argyle.
