Our next installment in the series is a old-new rider. Caleb Fairly began his cycling career with the Slipstream family in our development program and returns after two years at the elite level. A native of Texas Fairly has been riding a bike since he was three years old, and we mean ‘riding’ since he never even needed training wheels!

Caleb Fairly

What is your first memory involving a bicycle?

I had this little bike, a tiger stripe bike, when I was three. It’s the bike that I took my training wheels off. Well, dad took them off. I didn’t need them! I had ridden so much on my dad’s top tube that I never actually needed training wheels because I already had a feel for the bike.

If you had not become a professional cyclist, what career do you think you would have pursued?

That’s hard to imagine. I’d like to be involved in the sports world at some level. I don’t know… maybe business related.

What is your favorite race or type of race?

My favorites are always going to be the short, hilly ones — like the Ardennes or some of the races in Italy, because they suit me the best. There really aren’t that many races like this so any of these are going to be my favorites.

What do you do when you need to get your mind off cycling?

Uhhh, eat. I go out with my wife or go home and see my family; maybe go on a camping trip. Sometimes my brothers and I will go stream fishing. Stream fishing; NOT fly fishing or pond fishing, STREAM fishing. It’s more challenging. You have to get in there and it’s not casting, you just put the rod in there. And I fish with worms too! Only worms.

So something outdoors to get my mind off cycling.

What do you look forward to coming home after a long time away racing?

Usually it’s just a home cooked meal; ya know, something not rice and chicken! Also talking to someone else, like not always Pete Stetina! Talking with my wife, my family.

What kind of home cooked meal?

Having a good old fashioned bar-be-que or anything my mom or wife cooks! [Ed. Good answer!]
