Today’s opening TTT in Tirreno saw the boys of Garmin- Cervélo blast into second place on the flat, 16.8km course. A last minute roster change meant David Zabriskie came in to replace David Millar, who came down with a flu and fever before the race.
Jonathan Vaughters, directing along with DS Lionel Marie, said “We are very happy with our performance. The team started with a bit of hesitation – its a new team and the first time a lot of these guys have raced together in a TTT, so that’s natural.”
“The course was very straight forward with few corners and once the guys go into a rhythm, from the halfway point to the finish we were the fastest team.”
“We’re happy with that. The team is very motivated and we’re looking forward to a great week of racing.”
Garmin-Cervélo clocked in at 18:17, led by sprinter Tyler Farrar.
Tomorrow’s second stage is 202km from Carrara to Arezzo with a field sprint likely.
