Dan Martin took a solo win at the Japan Cup thanks to a strong team effort, encapsulating the efforts of the entire 2010 season.
Director sportif Johnny Weltz sent this report:
A long breakaway formed from the morning a group of nine riders. We gave the group up to one minute before we had Johan on the front doing the chase.
He did a huge job and chased it down mostly by himself!
After several new attacks Dan could not wait any longer and attacked very early on the hardest climb of the race. No one could follow him and they probably thought it was a bit early with 35 km to go.
But on the hard circuit it was an advantage to be on the front for a strong rider like Dan. So he built up a gap to 1:30 and no one ever
got close to him again.
He won ahead of a group of 13 riders where we had Timmy and Tom in it — they did a very got job keeping the group together
to help keep Dan in the front.
We finished the season best way possible.
