Tom Danielson maintained his high position on the overall classification of the Vuelta while Tyler Farrar just missed out on gaining valuable sprint points. Director sportif Johnny Weltz has the report:

Right from the gun attacks flew off the front of the peloton, but no break went for the first 40 km.
This meant it was all together for the first point sprint withthe points jersey in play. Tyler misjudged the sprint line and took second.
A lot of attacks went and Dave Z was in almost all of them except the last one which succeeded.
The rest of the stage was then one long control game with the leader’s team doing the work so that the group didn’t get too big of a gap.
The favorites didn’t move in the GC, so the stage never got all that exciting as expected. Tommy D was in the front group with the favorites without any difficulty.
