Race report: Meyer unlucky in Bayern-Rundfahrt finale

Team Garmin-Transitions almost capped off a week in Germany with a breakaway win, thanks to Travis Meyer working hard to keep the break alive. Unfortunately, that work made it possible for the hanger-on to take the win off of Meyer’s back. Director Johnny Weltz sent this report:

From the gun it was a fast stage. We took part in a lot of moves but none that worked. Finally at same 70 km into the stage a group of three got a gap with Meyer in it.

They gained up to 3:30. At that point the chase was on for the bunch, and as a the day was rainy and windy it got a lot harder than expected.

With 30 km to go the third break rider got dropped from the front group. And shortly after the second guy in the break stopped working. So it was up to Travis to keep it alive and he managed to keep them clear of a chasing field with all the sprinters wanting the win.

With only a few seconds ahead there was no time to play games and the Lampre rider took all the benefit of the hard work Travis did keeping the break alive, so he finished second on the stage.

Martijn Maaskant took sixth, so it was still a positive way to end the week.

Typical of a selfish sponge to leach off the back of some young Aussie talent.
You’ll get the next one Travis. The cream always rises.
All Hail the Meyer boys and the Argyle Armada.
