One of Team Garmin-Transitions’ newest additions, Matt Wilson, had a huge day on the queen stage of the Tour of California. The Aussie rode in the long break, making all of the selections. Then after the catch he bridged across solo to a counter-attack and almost stayed away to the end — all the while keeping his team leader in mind. He sent us this report:
So today’s plan was for one of us who weren’t on GC to get up the road in a break and get a gap so we could drop back and have more numbers in the finish to help Dave in the last 50km.
So yeah, that’s exactly what happened. I was just there for Dave and sort of policing the break until there was only three of us left with about 30k to go. At that point I realized that the best thing I could do for Dave was go for it myself as it took the pressure off the team behind and we would also take the time bonus’ (and the stage win wouldn’t of been too bad either!)
We eventually got caught though but I knew the plan was still good and I was the only guy in our team that HTC and Radio Shack would let go so I went for it again… A bit disappointed not to hang on but it all worked out well for team in the end. Its nice when a plan a comes off!
