Team Garmin-Transitions’ Christian Vande Velde kept himself within striking distance of the overall podium after a wet and generally miserable day in the saddle. Johnny Weltz has the report:
A lot of rain today! WIth a raining day ahead of us the start was unusually fast at 50km average the first hour.
A group of seven riders took off and gained up to five minutes. Then the attacks started in the mountains as the leader’s team had a hard time controlling the field.
The break was caught and a big selection and elimination happend — we had VDV up in the action as there is only a very small difference on GC. Anything can still happen! VDV is still well placed to move up on GC and is going better evey day.
