Team Garmin-Transitions continued its good results of the spring, moving into the second half of the Classics with an oh-so-close second place for Ryder Hesjedal in the Amstel Gold race. Director sportif Johnny Weltz has the report:
After all the flat classics, today we turned towards the hilly ones, which also meant bringing in another type of rider. We could hardly get a better start on that with Ryder’s super form coming into this race. And he matched that with a great performance to take second!
That even after a whole day in the car (13 hours) to get here he managed to get the body together and deliver.
It was a very tactical race, with a long breakaway that was never really a danger. We had some hard crashes — Timmy and Ricardo had at meeting with the ground. We hoped that Timmy’s colarbone is not broken as it would be his second this season!
The other guys were good in support to keep things in hand and bring Ryder as long as posible into the finale in the best condition as posible. A good day and a great way to start off the second half of the Spring Classics!
