Team Garmin-Transitions started the Volta a Catalunya with a short 3.8km prologue under wet conditions. Director sportif Johnny Weltz has the report:
The prologue today turned out to be a tricky affair, on a really technical circuit and on top of that a wet one. The outcome was an unknown winner, but still a indication on who we should look for toward the GC. We had Ryder do a really good race and finish 12th. Some of our other guys played it safe as we didn’t want to take risks, but still finished very well.
Ryder is in a very good position for the GC as some of the riders up front will make it over the mountains — and with no mountain-top finish means the race can be decided in just a few seconds. Tomorrow we start out very near to our home and have the advantage of knowing all the roads by heart!
