Race report: Tirreno-Adriatico, stage 6

Team Garmin-Transitions keeps fighting hard in Tirreno-Adriatico, with Martijn Maaskant making it into the decisive move of the day. Team director Matt White gives us the report:

Martijn Maaskant - Tirreno-Adriatico, stage 6

Today was another very challenging day at the office! After two consecutive days of six-to-seven hours there was a fair bit of fatigue in the legs of many in the peloton.

Martijn and Johan have been getting stronger during this block and after a super ride by Johan in yesterday’s all-day break Martijn went on the offensive today. A very good group emerged from a ballistic start and with the ten riders working very well together the gap went out to five minutes.

Then the panic set-in, and a combination of three teams had to chase flat-out to have any chance catching Martijns’ group, which also had two riders at under two minutes on GC in it.

Unfortunately they did catch Martijn inside the last kilometer — only one of the break riders stayed away with the peloton missing him by only two seconds!

Tomorrow our goal is simple , to WIN! It will be the first normal sprint of the week with all of our sprinters on board.
