Team Garmin-Transitions starts its second stage race of the week with Tirreno-Adriatico in Italy. Director sportif Matt White brought the Classics group and found that he brought the northern European weather too:
Well 5 degrees Celsius and rain is not something you associate with Italian racing. Luckily the rain held off for a bit and it was a short and intense stage. Otherwise it would have been a re-run of last weekend in Belgium!
After a sole rider went clear early, a stand off began with teams waiting until the rider reached 10 minutes. We then joined in the chase of the former U23 world TT champ from ISD — Martijn and especially Johan stretched their legs with the intention of giving Tyler the chance of victory.
On the downhill, wet run-in a group of four slipped away. This group was caught 500 meters from the line but there was just not enough time to reel them all in. Tyler was seventh on the stage after nearly going down due to an altercation with an aggressive Italian Kamikaze 500m from the finish. Tomorrow is another day and I hope for the boys’ sake a warmer one.
