Director’s report from Matt White:
Once again the team went on the attack placing Cameron Meyer and Matt Wilson into an eight-man break after another hectic start.
The break unfortunately had a couple of riders still within striking distance on GC so the gap was held at the two minute mark by the leader’s team.
The break still led over the first passage of the Willunga climb. Then coming into the approach of the final climb the break was swallowed up by the lead peloton. The bunch splintered into many groups over the final climb but with 20km yet to get back on many small groups amalgamated in pursuit of four leaders; including local World Champion Cadel Evans, Luis Leon Sanchez, Valverde and a rider from Liquigas.
In the final kilometers numerous teams gave chase and the two Spaniards worked over the others. Sanchez managed to just hold off a fast approaching lead group with Cam sneaking away in a splinter group and finishing in the top 10, even after a 100 plus kilometre break away!
So all that has to be decided now is the minor places and the victory in downtown Adelaide tomorrow. A one second time bonus will put many riders straight into the top 10 so we will be looking to grab them with either Robbie or Julian.
