Vuelta a Espana, stage 18

Director’s report from Johnny Weltz:

Back in the mountains near Madrid, we suffered through a rainy and cold day. Nonetheless, it was a very fast start where several groups ere trying to take off. As such a lot of riders were dropped but we had our guys well placed where they had to be.

Dan Martin - Vuelta a Espana, stage 18 David Millar - Vuelta a Espana, stage 18

Tom was in some moves when a group went half way up the first climb, but then our worst scenario happened — Tom was dropped with breathing problems. His breathing was so heavy that he was not able to even pedal. Still Martijn got him over the category 1 climb but there was no way to recover him.

Tom Danielson - Vuelta a Espana, stage 18

He has been hurting with sickness towards the end of the race and there was no way to get through the weather on a day like this. The rest of our riders had no mission today other than finish well.

Tom, if there was a reward in the Vuelta for most courageous rider, you shoudl have it. Even with your illness early last week and your lost time, you still fought it out. You didn’t do like other riders, you stuck it out until you couldn’t go no more. Don’t be dissapointed with yourself, you put up a hell of a vuelta.

I was so sorry to see that Tom had to abandon. He was riding so well. Here’s to a quick recovery.

Still pulling for Julian to finish his third GT.

Hope Tom has a speedy recovery and can keep his form — if so, I think he can rock at Worlds. Great Vuelta for the whole team and I’ll be pulling for David for the TT.

Tear it up in the TT Millar! I hope that rumours about Contador are just that – buying a winner rather than developing one would take much of the fun out of following Garmin.

  • Paul Martin

    I’ll second that ch.
