Maaskant gives his all in the break – Vuelta a Espana, stage 17

Director’s report from Johnny Weltz:

Today got pretty crazy in a hurry — Tom Danielson crashed and then Martijn was in a breakaway for 185km. He was so close to winning the teams third stage!

The long breakaway of five riders with Martijn in it turned out to be impossible to bring back, mostly because of Martijn’s huge efforts! He initiated the attacks at the end and countered with a strong solo effort to go for the win, but he was caught with 200 meters to go, and was destroyed mentally afterward. Lucky for us Tom seems to be ok to continue.
