Vuelta a Espana – Stage 5

Director’s report from Johnny Weltz:

Julian Dean, Johnny Weltz - Vuelta a Espana, stage 5

Back in Spain and 37 degrees (C) to start with! Attacks went right from the gun, with the Spanish enjoying being back on home ground. A group of six riders took of right from the start. As there were a few good riders present it gained seven minutes fast.

We and three other teams then started to control the speed in the field — it came to a long and hard chase in a bumpy area in a strong heat We had Christian who was doing a very solid job all day in front of the field.

The break was caught with 15km to go when all the teams were fighting for position before a very tricky climb with a narrow decent. We got through it well and had our guys to bring Tyler to the best position. It went well only missing Julian in the last corner when he was caught in a crash.

In the end Tyler got on the wheel of the guy who won the stage, but missed a little bit in the end to make it to a stage win. But a very nice fourth spot showed he is getting closer.

Was Tyler having trouble shifting in the final sprint? The video from above looked like he was moving his right arm a lot like he was searching for a gear. Just wondering. Keep up the great effort Garmin guys!
