The queen stage: Tour de France, stage 17

Team Garmin-Slipstream’s top contenders, Bradley Wiggins and Christian Vande Velde, fought the good fight today in the toughest stage of the Tour de France. While Wiggins was not able to stay with the stage winners, he limited his losses with the help of Vande Velde. He now looks ahead to the crucial stage 18 time trial where he hopes to regain that lost time.

Tough day today Brad, Keep going, a day at a time and tomorrow will be your day! Give ‘em hell. We are all so very proud of you

  • Phil Martin

Bradley was a star once again today – he did us Brits VERY PROUD once again. Can’t explain how exciting it is to have a Brit rider actually in contention for the TdF GC.

So gutsy today – laying it all on the line was sooo impressive.

PLUS Massive PROPS to Christian VV as well. One of the bravest Team performances of the TdF so far. Inspirationally courageous, self-sacrificing and gritty.

Both of you are Legends for me.

And so impressed at the team spirit that you guys show. CLASS and COMMITMENT on a bike – as a fan, i can’t ask for more.

    Go Roll to Triumph tomorrow!

  • Paul Martin

Fantastic ride today Bradley – they are all cacking themselves about what you are going to do in the time trial !!!

  • Colin Barnes

Another magnificent and inspiring ride from Brad and Christian today. Deeply impressed at how deep Christian dug to support Brad and the maturity with which Brad handled the afternoon. A great display.

Best of luck to the whole team in tomorrows time trial. You guys are at the absolute pinnacle of the sport and are showing why. Whatever happens over the next few days you’ve ridden this tour with guts and style and teamwork.

    GO WIGGO!!!!

Très belle étape, Bravo à Christian Vande Velde et Bradley Wiggin’s pour ce beau spectacle. Desolée pour Tyler Farrar avec sa chute en debut d’étape. Bonne chance à toute l’équipe pour demain.

  • Mike

Nicely done, guys. Good luck to you all in the TT tomorrow. Take back some of that time!!

  • Andy Lander Stow

Well done to Bradley on a gruelling day. You are doing far better than expected and we’re all proud of you.
    Have a great day tomorrow!

  • Betsy

Terrific job fellas! I was only able to see the action from mostly Brad and Christian, but Dave Z’s delivery of Christian up to Brad at one point was impressive.
Then, follow that up with such a heroic effort from Christian shepherding Wiggo through.
Great job. You should be proud of the job put in today.

  • Sam

Great ride by DZ & CV. A shame for you today Wiggo that you ended up a bit isolated, but I hope you have left something in reserve for the next two days. Very proud & can’t wait for TT. Good luck all.

  • Jason

Good luck Wiggins with the TT..

  • GrumpyOldWoman

Great performance from a team who reputedly ‘just target the team time-trials’!!

  • Karen Chrisman

What a great job today! Christian, you are the ultimate team mate. I admire your skill as a rider as well as your selflessness as a member of your team. Good luck to all in the TT tomorrow.

  • Jennifer

Bradley and Christian, you were both so inspirational today. It makes me proud to be a fan of this team.

  • Steve

Team Garmin, that was truly inspiring. True grit, you guys rode with so much pride and heart. DZ, way to hump it and contribute every last oz of energy at the end to get CVV up to Brad and even take one last pull in front. Christian, dude you were in that “fox hole” with Brad giving every last thing you had. Wiggs, you made it, you did the best you could. Hopefully you are not down, because you have no reason to be….that was inspiring. Recover as best you can and BLISTER that time trial tomorrow. Leave it all on the road and you can jump into second place. Dont worry about stage 19 or Ventoux, you go balls to the walls on that TT. Great job all of you!!

  • Dale S

    Team Garmin rocks the TdF!
Way to go guys, great team effort.
Congrats to CVV & Wiggo for that truly heroic effort on todays stage.
Ryder: That was a totally impressive ride – 26th!!
I can’t remember a more interesting TdF to watch on TV
With the final stages in front of you I wish everyone the best of luck.
    Go Garmin Go!!

Anthony C Lincolnshire England Proudly riding in 09 Team Argyle today GO GARMIN-SLIPSTREAM !

  • Russell Houghton

Superb, what can I say. As a Brit follower of the Tour since 1980 this has been one of the best and it is not finished!

Thanks to all the team helping BW – you will be needed on that Mountain. It is so great having two teams worrying about what you can do Brad. The UK generally and the UK press just don’t get road cycling, with all the track hype after the Olympics.

What you have already done is brilliant. What little we see on TV shows that your head is in the right place – so with nothing to lose go for it Bradley. I bet Lance/Andy/Frank are all expecting to tear you to shreds you on the Mont – SO GO ONE PROVE THEM WRONG.

    Cheering for all of you.

  • Jackie Harrington

You guys are SO awesome. What can I say?? … more please!!!!

  • Rubertoe

Brad Rocks – Great ride – not just today but in the whole tdF whatever happen’s you are superb and Britain LOVES you -
