Bradley Wiggins - Tour de France 2009, stage 9 Team Garmin-Slipstream is through the first part of the 2009 Tour de France in fine fashion, with two GC contenders sitting in the top ten — last year’s fourth place overall Christian Vande Velde in eighth, and for many the revelation of the Tour this year so far, Bradley Wiggins in fifth, just 46 seconds behind the yellow jersey.

Stage 9 was the final leg through the Pyrenees, with two tough climbs, including the high-point of the Tour, the 17km long Col du Tourmelat. But with nearly 50km of racing after the final climb, the stage ended up being about the breakaway going for individual glory rather than a GC battle. As such, Wiggins and Vande Velde kept their spots with the other GC riders, with help from David Millar and a resurgent Ryder Hesjedal — all four finishing with the peloton.

The race moves north overnight towards the first of two so-called ‘rest days.’ The second part of the Tour will begin Tuesday with three stages that move towards the Alps, where the race will be won or lost.
