Sundance Channel gets on its mark for the 96th Tour de France as it presents the US television premiere of the inspirational cycling documentary Blood, Sweat + Gears: Racing Clean to the Tour de France on June 29. An original production directed by Nick Davis, Blood, Sweat + Gears: Racing Clean to the Tour de France follows the journey of an American cycling team seeking to compete in its first Tour de France, the epic French bicycle race that covers over 3,500 kilometers in 22 grueling days. The 2009 Tour de France runs from July 4-July 26. Blood, Sweat +Gears: Racing Clean to the Tour de France premieres on Sundance Channel on Monday, June 29 at 10:30pm et/pt.
Blood, Sweat +Gears: Racing Clean to the Tour de France chronicles the journey of Team Slipstream-Chipotle, now Team Garmin-Slipstream, a young Colorado-based professional cycling team founded and managed by Jonathan “JV” Vaughters. The team, dedicated to creating the next generation of cycling champions, entered the spotlight when it pioneered the most progressive anti-doping system in all of professional sports. As the film begins, the riders are beginning to train for the 2008 season, which they hope will lead to the team’s first invitation to the Tour de France and a title sponsor.
Blood, Sweat +Gears: Racing Clean to the Tour de France takes us on a fascinating ride as the team travels from the mountains of Colorado; to the first major race of the 2008 season in Doha, Qatar; and on to key competitions throughout the U.S. and Europe, including the Tour of California and Paris-Roubaix. The film also tells the stories of several riders, including Magnus Backstedt, a serene Swede and Paris-Roubaix; Mike Friedman, an affable young American rebounding from a life-threatening health incident; the newly-installed team leader, David Millar, who returned to the sport determined to change it after serving a two-year ban; and Christian Vande Velde, who for the first time in his career finds himself as the team leader at the Tour de France and ends up in fourth place.
Blood, Sweat +Gears: Racing Clean to the Tour de France is produced and directed by Nick Davis. Executive producers for Sundance Channel are Lynne Kirby and Mala Chapple.

Looks amazing! But for those of us who live in places where Sundance is not available…please let us know if there are any plans to issue a DVD…

  • Diana L.

Since Sundance is not available on the cable systems here, I hope you can make it available in the Argyle store.

  • Amy B

Wow. Can’t wait to see it.

i liked all the behind the scenes stories like how how it was decided who would make the TDF squad, never knew Millar had some shock and awe with VDV taking over the team. it’s everything a good documentary should show, untold stories, unseen scenes, etc.

    really psyched for TDF now!

  • Sammy

What a great show. It really shows the work and pain that goes into being a professional cyclist. I would love to purchase the DVD if Garmin Slipstream and Sundance can make it available.

  • Tim O.

Wow that was a damn good show! Kudos to everyone involved!

Media Trainer: “What’s your guys’s view of the media?”

    David Millar: “They’re rat b******ds.”

HA. Great documentary, I’d buy that if it becomes available.

I loved the show. There were lots of interesting parts that showed a lot of aspects with the Garmin-Chipolte Team. A few things that I thought would be in there that were not. Tour de Georgia last year with Trent’s second place finish. Or the Giro last year with VDV in Pink. Also, where was DZ? He wasn’t in any of the shots and he is an important part of the team.

  • Bill Moss

Watched the film late last night. You gained a fan. Thanks for the inside scene to your quest.

  • Jeff

+1 on Phillip’s comments. I would’ve loved to have seen team bus footage when VdV took pink in the Giro. I also missed seeing DZ, but I guess maybe the idea of being constantly followed by a camera crew might not be his cup of tea– based on the snippet following the end credits, it obviously wasn’t Allen Lim’s!

Wonderful film. Easily ranks up there with “Overcoming” and “Hell On Wheels”.

Watched Blood, Sweat, and Gears last night…excellent! As an American married to a French woman, I’ve come to enjoy and appreciate cyling, especially the Tour. It’s great to have a team to follow as opposed to an individual, as it is certainly a team event. I was in Carqueirrane for the celebration for Richard Veranque when he finished 2nd or 3rd that year, and the shame that came with the revelation of his doping (and the mess that’s been happening since) gives great credence to what your team is doing.
Give them hell boys…you’ve got some Americans back home that are paying attention!
