Team Garmin-Slipstream’s Giro fortunes changed Thursday on stage 18 with Danny Pate and Julian Dean making it into the day’s main break that survived all the way to the finish line in Benevento. Pate, who was one of the most active on the day and instrumental in establishing the breakaway, rode hard to make the final selection of seven. He rode smartly inside the final kilometer, watching and marking the sprint, but coming up just short in the final meters and settling for third on the day.
“Now that I’ve had some time to think about it, I’m happy with third,” Pate said. “JD and I got in the break and after that, we couldn’t have done better tactically. It shows how well we’re working as a team, which is good for us here and for the rest of the season!”
Pate’s podium adds another near-win to the growing list for Team Garmin-Slipstream at the Giro.

fine effort and so interesting to watch
DPate – I understand your sentiments about “no one remembers second” but I much prefer cheering on a 2nd place rider who I will never have to worry about surfacing in a ‘doping’ story than a winning rider only later to find out they doped. The win will come, but until then, keep doing it the right way and people will remember.
Yeah Danny! Much love for you from Wisconsin.
Hey Danny! Great effort. We could see it on your face and in your pedaling. We know you gave it all and left it all on the road, and that’s all we can ask.
Great Race today Danny and JD! It’s always nice to see a successful breakaway and having some argyle in the mix made it even better. Best stage finish of the Giro in my eyes–real fun to watch.
Keep up the good work. Y
good job danny
