Wiggo the climber! Giro, stage 5

Race report from Matt White

Bradley Wiggins - Giro d'Italia, stage 5 Well… Wiggo has certainly been the revelation for us on the climbing front! It’s not so surprising considering that this is the first year Wiggo has put 100% of his focus on the road. His break from the track has enabled him to really slim down and he is really focused on pushing his own limits.

He said only weeks ago that one of his goals was to be there for VDV in the high mountains come July and already this week he has proved he will be an invaluable asset to us as a team and for his own exploits.

Tomorrow is a very very solid outing before we have another chance for Tyler on Friday with the race going through three countries in just one stage.

The fact he’s 1.90 m (6 ft 3 in, per Wikipedia) makes this even more dramatic. So hard for big guys to get their weight down enough to climb like that!

I always wondered why we didn’t see more of Brad when the road gets steep. He’s not as heavy as other sustainable high power riders like Cancellara, Karpets et al. My back of the envelope accounts tell he should do ok in regular mountains; right, Angliru, Marie Blanc or Mortirolo are not for him, but he should definitely be able to defend himself elsewhere.

Brad I hope you can dedicate more of your carer to the raod and that we can watch you on the telly more often. And good luck for next week’s time trial, I guess if you do good there it might become a turning point for you life :) Allez!
