A flat finish to the first road stage of the Giro d’Italia meant the likelihood of a field sprint — and team Garmin-Slipstream’s sprinter Tyler Farrar was there in the end to take a top five finish, putting him into sixth overall.
“The team put in a great ride for me today,” said Farrar. “Danny, Cam, and Tom did a fantastic job riding the front, and Dave, Bradley, and Julien took care of me for the final. I was feeling good and picked off the intermediate sprint. But I just didn’t quite have the luck in the end. I know that the legs are good, and the team is flying so I think a stage win is definitely in the cards!”

Regarding the chaos of the run-in to the finish, including a crash with less than 6km to go, Farrar said it was business as usual. “All sprints are pretty crazy, I don’t think this one was any worse than normal. Maybe a little because everyone was nervous for the first stage of the race, but its never calm at this level. We’re getting into the groove now though, better results to come!”
Director’s report from Matt White
Today’s first road stage was a chance for the sprinters to shine. A very fast run-in on a challenging finish circuit produced an exiting final. The boys had Tyler in great position coming into the final corners, with a ding-dong battle over Cav’s wheel evolving, with Petacchi edging out Tyler going into 1km to go. He then jumped first, while the sprinters just held their position over the final meters. Tyler finished 5th but showed he is ready to have a crack at the win — tomorrow we roll the dice again.

Watched the whole stage online and loved it. Great work. I was pointing to the screen and shouting to my family “That’s Farrar! See the argyle?”
Great to see Tyler up near the front. Can’t wait to celebrate the stage win!
Anyone interested should check out Julian Deans site for his comments on the Team TT.
I could hardly believe my eyes today. Not the usual token couple of guys to help Ty towards the end of a stage but the team actually riding full gas for him. Some might even call it a lead out train. ‘Bout damn time! Sounds like mgmt might acually believe in the boy. Stage win coming up! Can’t wait.
Yea!!!I’ll be looking foward to another Sprint!!!GO TYLER!!
