Giro 2009: So close on stage 1
Team Garmin-Slipstream put forth a valiant effort today in the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia, finishing a close second in the team time trial by only six seconds. As a result, the team has five riders all within six seconds of the overall lead, including team captain Christian Vande Velde.
“Today went good for us, not great but good,” said Vande Velde. “Columbia did a great ride today and beat us. They have a great team of specialists, like us, and just went faster on the day. Hats off to them. I am happy to get the TTT behind me and start the Giro with great motivation!”

Nice job, boyz. Have to say to JV, too much spray, too much focus. Sad it did not work out. Now it’s time to take all that speed and put Tyler into the jersey. With that train, Tyler should be able to show Cav what else Garmin has in mind!

JV, first off: calm down and stop with the mellow drama. You guys still rock and will still kick some butt. Cav won’t hold rosa forever. So go out and attack and ride a GREAT race. Because you guys totally can. I just jumped ships from Columbia so you guys need to rock some argyle magic!

We all believe YOU are the best team in the world. Lets not forget that just because of six seconds in a TTT. The Garmin Giro squad has serious GC contenders, guys who can win in in the mountains, two guys who can win sprint stages and several guys who can win the ITT. This squad is stacked. Most teams have competitors for one or two types of stages (including Columbia, who have no legitimate GC contender) but not the whole package. Chin up. Take it to them.
