Team Garmin-Slipstream, defending Team Time Trial champion of the 2008 Giro d’Italia, today announced its much-anticipated line-up for the 2009 edition of the race.
Christian Vande Velde, the first American rider to wear the Maglia Rosa since 1988, will be joined by Bradley Wiggins, Cameron Meyer, Danny Pate, David Millar, David Zabriskie, Julian Dean, Tom Danielson and Tyler Farrar.
“We are bringing an incredible group of riders to the Giro d’Italia, and we have some big goals we want to achieve,” said Matt White, Director. “The team has been training hard for this race and we’d of course love to get the Maglia Rosa again, but we will be happy with a few strong performances.”
When asked about the difficulty of choosing the list, White added: “Narrowing down a Grand Tour list is always difficult, especially when guys like Ryder Hesjedal have been having a tremendous season. But we need to keep our goal of helping Christian at the Tour de France in mind, and preserving someone like Ryder now could be a huge benefit to us later.”
The team will look to defend last year’s Team Time Trial victory on Saturday.

TALK ABOUT AN EXCITING LINE UP MATT !
So looking forward to Saturdays start and eager to see ARGYLE on a PINK background again ? Look forward to seeing Dave Millar back in action hope it builds the form again for you nicely Dave ? Perhaps see an Englishman in Pink this Year ? that would be another GARMIN-SLIPSTREAM First ? And Tyler a Stage beckons for you . Just need to hear that FARRRARRRRRRR! Again on commentary that alone is worth the training
Good luck guys you have a great Director with You Have a GREAT RACE MATT ! Anthony C Lincolnshire England Proudly wearing Argyle today as Englands best dressed GARMIN fan
“May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. And the rain fall soft upon your fields. May God keep you in the palm of his hand.”
This sets up great for either Farrar or Dean. Pretty good looking train to counter whatever Columbia sends out there.. Also looks like Pate, Tommy D, and VDV will get to do a little “freelancing”. As great as it’d been to have Ryder there, it makes perfect sense to keep him fresh for the TDF.
Happy to see Tommy D back in the mix for a major stage race. Would love to see him mix it up for a run at a stage win.
Best of luck for the TTT and I hope for some great results from the whole group. JD and Tyler should get in the mix on many stages. DZ, Cam and Millar will get their shots on the long TT in the mountains and again to the finish in Rome. I’d love to see Pate pull off another stunning escape and I’ll keep hoping TD can post a solid GC. I’ll be watching from Atlanta. Go get ‘em!
Looks like a really strong team! I am glad to see The Pate and T.D. in the mix! Good luck to Julian and Tyler in the sprints! Let the Argyle Armada roll through Italy!!!
Julian!!!!
Oh my… that is one fast TT team! Can’t wait to see this train. Love the sound of those Felt bikes and Zipp wheels when cranked up to speed… air being sliced apart… as a fan it’s a rush. All aboard the Garmin express.
Here’s to the Argyle Armada winning the TTT and getting another maglia rosa.
Nice. Glad to see tyler making his grand tour debut. Would love to see him spank Cav again.
Started watching team Garmin after last year’s TDF and now I can’t wait to see them in action in a grand tour again. Go Garmin Giro Group! I’ll be watching in my finest argyle.
I Love the lineup, but don’t love that I will not be able to watch the Argyle Train Dominate the TTT on Versus.
Excellent team by the Giro !!! . Good luck to all the team.
Versus will not have the Giro. Where can we get the full stages online?
Great team – always better with a flying Kiwi in the mix.
Go Julz, go boys, go hard!
Great to see Julian in the line up when it was looking so dodgy for awhile. Go Julz!
Good luck guys. Julz, show em Kiwis can fly.
Christian’s Year all the way around… and I hope to see him back in St Louis at the tour of Missouri.. But right now it is Cycling’s Playoffs.. the Giro, LE Tour, doesn’t get any better then this for a major Cycling Fan. Good Luck Farrar and Vandy! Kick some ass and take down Cavendish….
being a hard arse pays off, good on you julz.
The Giro should be shown live on CyclingTV but I don’t think they have worked out the fees yet. Will send an update if that changes. Best wishes to the team, Brad
Awesome lineup, very much looking forward to the TTT and the stages thereafter… especially the sprints – with Julz and Tyler, Garmin should be right up there in the mix…
david millar is a scot but I’m sure he won’t mind being called english if he gets to wear pink, big chance julz sho them what you can do..
Wow! Cam Meyer – from junior Aussie champ to Giro rider (at 21!). And he’s not there for his good looks. Watch this kid light up a break late in the Tour if given some freedom! And he can climb too to help out CVV. Go Cam. And did you hear they just signed Jack Bobridge as a stagiare!?! HE is going to be dead-set champion.
As a fellow Scot, calling one of us English is like calling an American Canadian, which is something I admittedly enjoy doing to wind up the uninitiated.
It could of course be applied to the one and only Brad, I can go fast and i’m gonna prove it, Wiggins.
Good line-up for sure. Definitely a couple of stage wins there. I don’t think Columbia and Cavendish will be worried about Tyler though! Cav’s just on another planet at the moment.
