The rehab progress of Team Garmin-Slipstream’s David Millar is moving along well, due both to the medical team’s expertise and a cooperative patient! Millar broke his clavicle during stage 8 of Paris-Nice. Team physiotherapist Toby Watson reports on the status of the team leader in a letter to his specialist Dr. David Potter.
I am Toby Watson, team physiotherapist for the Garmin Slipstream Pro Cycling Team, and as such I have been helping David Millar with his rehab following Dr. Potter’s surgery. I met Dr. Potter the last time David had a follow-up appointment, and he provided me with your details as a contact for further progress.
David has been most diligent with his exercises – his ranges of motion are as follows:
- Flexion to ninety degrees with no compensations if consciously thinking of good movement
- Abduction to eighty without compensations
- External Rotation approximately 90% compared to uninjured side
- Scapular motion equal, but tendency is for the upper traps to be over active, and so the scapula hitches. Once again this can be corrected by David simply with conscious thought.Strength has only been measured for External and Internal Rotators in the neutral position. IR’ors are adequate – Grade V. Er’ors significantly less so – Grade IV-. Pattern of contraction has improved though – he no longer uses triceps in a futile co-contraction as was his wont at his previous visit with Dr. Potter.
I have attached his two most recent x-rays, and would greatly appreciate Dr. Potter’s opinion on the state of David’s recuperation. I am eager to progress David’s ROM exercises to overhead, and to also work on more functional strength exercises, but await Dr. Potter’s okay prior to taking this next step.
I look forward to Dr. Potter’s opinion greatly.
Thank you kindly,
Toby Watson

Is that an argyle pattern in the head of David’s greater tubercle?
Well, all the best to DM. Wish him a full recovery. Hope to see him back at the Dauphine Libere. Season is not over, he should be at 100% at the TDF.
All the best.
Bob.
I hear this team physiotherapist is a bit of a sort… can you put me in touch with him?
Good luck Millar – you’re in great hands.
Will David race the Giro? I read that on a French website (Eurosport.fr)
I hope you’re healing well, Dave. I’m looking forward to seeing you on your bike again.
