Team Garmin-Slipstream’s Cameron Meyer took home one gold and two silver medals at the recent track world championships in Poland. Now he is ready to take on the rest of the road season with the Argyle Armada.
What a week! It still has not sunk in yet that I am a world champion and am able to wear the rainbow jersey for a year and the world bands for the rest of my track career. To place fourth in the world championships in 2007, 2008 and the Olympic Games made me so hungry to train harder and achieve my goal of being the world points race champion.
I was the happiest man on the planet that night and any result in my next two events would of just been a bonus. Two nights later I was riding off for the Gold medal in the teams pursuit. Our Aussie team rode an awesome race to just finish second behind the strong Danish team.
On Saturday night I had the Madison with my teammate Leigh Howard. Going into the last 50 laps of the race we were only on 2 points and were in about 10th place. We gave it one big crack at taking a lap on the field to move us into the medals and it worked. We finished with a silver medal in a race that two years ago I lost two laps in.
So the medal count from three events was one world championship and two silver medals. I could not be any more pleased with the results I got and hope that this is just some of many more to come.
I now move onwards to Girona to set up base and join the Garmin boys. I am looking forward to my first year riding with the team in Europe and learning the ropes of the pro peleton. Thanks to everyone who have helped and supported me to these successes!
