Wiggins 2nd, Millar 5th in Paris-Nice opener

Bradley Wiggins, Paris-Nice stage 1 Pouring rain greeted the riders today in Amilly as they kicked off the 67th edition of Paris-Nice with a 9.3 kilometer, dead-flat individual time trial. Bradley Wiggins (above) held the fastest time for the second half of the day, until race favorite Alberto Contador finished seven second faster. Another race favorite, David Millar finished 5th and just 14-seconds off the winning time.

Unfortunately, Christian Vande Velde crashed in a wet corner during the event and finished just over a minute off Contador.

Was Wiggo having problems with the helicopters generating headwinds. I saw him waving furiously at the camera several times. Reminded me of a certain Lemond ride a few years back where Hinault got a lovely push from the helicopter.

  8. Tim says:

I too would love a report on Christians shoulder. Judging from his Twitter post he still seems in high spirits. Great job guys, and I hope Christian is okay.

  9. Crickets says:

Great job Garmin! Shame about the helicopter during Bradley’s ride and Christian’s crash (or bear attack or whatever ended up happening to his shoulder.) Gotta say though, what was up with all of those long orange helmet straps hanging out off of everyone’s chins? Bet that wouldn’t test too well in the wind tunnel. Sorry to nitpick since maybe it doesn’t really make that much of a difference but it sure seemed like those 3 inches of helmet strap could have just been cut off.
Best of luck for the rest of the race and the season!

*Special note from Christian to all you concerned fans*

I am doing OK, thanks. I lost quite a bit of skin but the team has done their best to put me back together. Today it isn’t raining…yet. So I am over the moon. The good news is that I was going fast before I crashed.

  11. George Rush says:

Well done Brad, i’m sure it doesn’t help but we all know you are the moral victor……

  12. David Millar always looks so damn good on a TT bike. I’ll guess he was playing it safe on the wet corners and the best is yet to come. All the best GC

  13. Aaron Malys says:

I hate to be critical – especially since I love this team and have been following since the beginning – but perhaps more focus should be put on contesting the field sprints? Farrar and Dean keep coming up with top 5 finishes without any lead out support – think what they could do if they had the kind of support the sprinting teams have! I know it’s early in the season, but perhaps a change in focus might be in order…

  17. Adam says:

why were you carrying water bottles?

  18. Josep says:

To cheer a team in front the Paris- Nice. Go Christian !!!

  19. Bob T says:

CJ- Glad to hear you are doing ok! Down…not out.

  20. RT says:

How come Peterson and Cozza get the orange TT bikes?
