Murcia preview: Ready for the classic Euro spring experience!

Timmy Duggan, Tour of Langkawi stage 4 Timmy Duggan checks in from the Vuelta de Murcia

I’m happy to be back in Europe now and am ready to start my first race here–the Vuelta de Murcia. I’ve spent the early part of my season doing some very good racing at the Tour Down Under and the Tour de Langkawi. Those race though have a very different feel from the races here in Europe. Here is where it’s all about.

Last week while training in Girona on a longer ride, I experienced all of those little things that make riding a bike in Europe so distinctive. For one, I was riding in the cold and rain, something I hadn’t done since I was last racing in Europe a year ago! Classic euro spring time experience right?

Most of my ride through the mountains were on tiny cow-poop covered slick roads to nowhere bordered by electric fences, a sheer cliff or just the sides of houses. Not a car in either direction for hours. Rounding one corner, I ran in to an an old guy surrounded by a herd of goats and his dog as they shuffled down the road to another pasture. I love that! Nice change from the suburbs and highways of the U.S. and Australia!

My Garmin teammates and I are chilling in the hotel before the Vuelta Murcia, staring out at the cold, windy, rainy day. Our strong squad is looking forward to this race that will come down to some tough mountains and a time trial.

Check back in later and send some sun our way! Timmy
