Steven Cozza’s special race report from inside the Tour of California peloton.
Yesterday was epic! Stage 2 took us across the Golden Gate Bridge and 115 miles down to Santa Cruz. It was pouring rain for all but the last five miles of the stage. A couple of times I thought I was drowning–seriously.
Today’s mission was to get Tom and myself inside the break and that’s exactly what we did. I wasn’t feeling great, so I did everything I could to help Tom. There was a huge ascent right before the finish and this is where the climbers threw down. Tom crested the top with Levi and hung on for the descent and stage win.
It was the first U.S. win for our team this year and an awesome day for all of us Garmin boys. Not only did we win the stage, but Tommy D and Dave Z hung with the front group and maintained their GC positions.
My day will come. The mountain stages aren’t for me right now. I am actually looking forward to the 200-kilometer classics coming our way.
