May he ride on.

Garmin-Slipstream, Tour of Qatar stage 5 We don’t realize how precious life is really. Not often enough. It’s a grand ‘moment’ in time. It is full and it is fragile. And sometimes, for reasons we can’t explain, it can be taken away.

Our hearts, prayers and thoughts go out to the friends and family of our fallen comrade. He left us all a message. Or rather, this was the message I took from him: we are all part of the same family of sport, of cycling, all driven to feel the breeze on our faces and the burn in our legs.

Frederiek Nolf memorial, Tour of Qatar stage 5 It doesn’t matter what team he was on or where he came from. No, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that all of us here riding, all of you there riding, realize how precarious life is.

Cherish your moment and let others know you care, because you just never know. He was here doing what I assume he enjoyed the most. I didn’t know him personally, but that is one of the beauties of this sport. You don’t have to know someone inside and out to know that feeling of camaraderie. We simply share something we enjoy most, pedaling our bicycles.

May he ride on.
