All things considered from diet to wedding rings

girona trainingWhile the other two-thirds of Garmin-Slipstream were either racing in the Tour of Down Under or at training camp in Silver City, twenty of us were in Girona getting ready for the Tour of Qatar.

One morning, Bradley, Magnus, Will and I discussed how so many things are done in cycling because ‘that’s the way it’s always been done’. With Garmin, we do things differently with the goal of giving our riders the best platform to express their talent. For example, together with our friends at Zone Nutrition, we have come up with an anti-inflammatory diet for our riders. We implemented the diet during camp and will use it at races this year.

For Garmin, nothing is too small to be considered. In fact two of our riders are now riding without their wedding rings. Their presence appeared to interfere with muscle function proprioceptively, resulting in weakness in certain areas. The very next training session an improvement was noticed. The only downside is they may have some explaining to do when they get home!

As a chiropractor, my role is to assess and manage such issues, as well as deal with some of the longer-term ‘injuries’. During camp, I saw everything from knee and back pain to elbow and shoulder issues. Two of our riders were sick as well. Despite such niggles that are part of the life of a professional athlete, everyone is in great condition and ready to race.

Until next time!

I’m just a cycling enthusiast who has had a hip and leg pain problem for some time. In fact my whole left side is messed up. I’ve tried everything to get rid of the discomfort. When I read about the ring thing, I had a “ah-ha” moment. I took off the ring, after much explaining, and lo and behold within 24 hours problem solved. Thank you so very much. I really can’t believe it! I can now ride better and my balance has improved too.
