Oh man, it feels so good to be a bike racer again! The Tour Down Under is the last real test of how my recovery from the brain injury is going as I see how well I respond to the rhythm of racing and day-to-day recovery. Returning to normal daily life after a trauma like that is one thing. But it’s another notch up to regain that last couple percent of capacity that is so critical as an elite athlete. But I am nothing but confident it will all come back just fine this week.
I just finished up the Down Under Classic criterium this evening in Adelaide, kicking off the week of racing. It was so nice to be back in the flying sea of colors, ‘feeling the rush’ of the peloton bombing through corners and down the road. There’s the hard break slamming, occasional skidding, a little swearing and near pile ups. But I, along with the rest of the pro peloton, blew out the cobwebs in front of an enormous crowd without incident. We finished with a field sprint and our CJ nailed a top 10.
With a good tune-up tonight and a recovery day tomorrow, we’ll start the first stage on Tuesday and likely be gunning for another field sprint for Julian and CJ.
Thanks for checking in! Timmy
