More than making up for his disappointing performance at the US Pro national time trial championships in August, Christian Vande Velde dug deep to win today’s severely undulating time trial course around Branson, MO. Vande Velde’s victory today put him in the yellow Missouri Tourism race leader’s jersey.
Rolling through the foothills of the Ozarks, the constantly changing profile of the 18-mile individual time trial proved challenging for even the best time trialists. The 18-mile course included three climbs with a 2.5-mile uphill finish stretch up to Shepherd of the Hills, the birthplace of Ozarks tourism industry in the early 1900’s.
“It was brutal. Everyone told me that it was really hard, but you have to see it to believe it, ” said Vande Velde. “I would say it was harder than the horrendous time trial I did at the Giro d’Italia earlier this year.”
Current US Pro national time trial champion Dave Zabriskie set the initial best time, finishing in just over 41 minutes. He eventually finished fifth. Rounding out the top ten was Tom Danielson in 8th and Danny Pate in 9th. Steven Cozza’s solid 14th place finished earned him the Best Young rider jersey.
Blake Caldwell crashed out of the time trial and official medical report details will be made available as soon as possible.

Go Christian!!!!!!!!!
VDV! Way to kick some ass out there today. Keep drilling it and I hope to see you in that leader’s jersey at the end of the race on Sunday!
Great job today Christian. Congrats to the entire team.
Awesome ride Christian!!! And DZ and Tom and Danny and Steven, you guys are rockin’ the joint!
Heartbroken for Blake, and sending all best thoughts to him, what a horrible turn of events after his great showing at US Pro.
According to the results on Cycling News, Cozza is second in the Best Young Rider jersey. Was there an error?
Great job guys. Thoughts and prayers go out to Blake for a good prognosis and recovery.
Congratulations! You’ve made us proud…AGAIN!
You are having a great year.
Love that Argyle!
I was streaming live from my desk at work and almost stood up and screamed when CVV came in with the best time. I can’t wait to be streaming live when you take it all down. You guys are amazing and are making cycling so great! Hail the return of…CVV to the spotlight again!
Cvv, you’re style is awesome, you look so relaxed and nonchalant, just like, “oh well, it hurts but, guess i better shrug it off and keep peddling” so refreshing to watch!!
Once again Garmin proved it owns the ITT!
Yellow looks good on you! Congrats and way to go!
Great ride today! Defend, defend, defend!
Yay Christian! I did I happy dance when you won the TT.
Great ride guys! Keep it up
WOW! Quite an impressive ride. I got to train in Branson for a week this summer and those hills are brutal. I came back to Illinois and just blow through the river valley so much faster. But an ITT in the Ozarks? Not for me. Great ride VdV. You look good in yellow.
Defend the yellow and get Dave on the podium as well.
BOOYA!! I knew we would blow up the ITT!! Great work to everyone!! The Pate is still crushing it!! Good luck today!! Let’s keep the party goin’!! Roll Argyle Armada Roll!!
Great ITT, CVV! I definitely had a good feeling about your and the team’s chances yesterday and for the entire race. Now it’s time to defend the yellow! Great job, guys.
