Lucas Euser, Steven Cozza and Danny Pate (hidden) drive the breakaway during the US Pro national road championships in Greenville, South Carolina.
When this team began five years ago, one goal was to be in the Tour de France. The next goal was to make new American champions. Young talent was recruited throughout the US and thrown to the wolves; those that could hack it survived. Sunday at the US Pro national road championships that young talent crossed the threshold into the next generation of American cycling.
Everyone on the team rode an incredible race. We did exactly what we wanted to and it was just a bad twist of fate or an unlucky gust of wind that caused us to lose the jersey. It’s unfortunate and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. But this is not the last you will see of us. We have put our blood, sweat and tears into this sport the past couple of years in an accelerated program to get our bodies and minds tough enough to handle the rigors of the European peloton. This is the new beginning.
I have never seen anything like I did Sunday with everyone stepping it up to the next level. I have never been in that position before, fighting for the win all the way to line. The race was in our control, we had that jersey wrapped up, it was ours. But just like every other day, sometimes life throws us curve balls. With two small laps to go, the man we were working for came to us and told us he was cramping and had nothing left. We were forced to make on the spot decisions and play a more risky role in trying to win the race. We took a risk. Who knows what would have happened if we didn’t. But how are we supposed to make it to the next level if we don’t make any mistakes?
Please don’t look at this as a failure; look at this as the next generation of American cycling making the mistakes that will take them to the big victories over the next decade to come. Victories that will inspire, motivate and restore the passion that cycling was founded on. We ride for you, our fans. We ride for your entertainment, fueling the fire that drives you to be a better athlete and a better person. We ride to win, but in order to do that we first have to lose.
If you need to take something positive out of yesterday, take the fact that the next generation is here and we aren’t going to go away for a long time. Take pleasure in knowing what is on the horizon.

I’m looking at it this way: Garmin Chipotle p/b H30 took home 4 of 6 medals. That ain’t too shabby!

You guys didn’t fail and I don’t think anyone thinks you did. You raced brilliantly and lost it by one of those margins that makes cycling agonizing and legendary.
If there is a failure here it is that an unrepentant cheat was allowed to race and win.
It was completely awesome and inspiring to see you all absolutely drilling the peloton into submission.
The professionalism you all display in the peloton is top notch. American cycling has never been in a better place. Much of that is owed to to you all.
Lucas, thanks for the insights. And keep up the good work, all of you!
YES–you guys brought it yesterday! You gave us a race-a real race! No assumptions, no presumption, just pure wonderful EFFORT, talent and grace. What a gift to the fans of cycling in America your team is.
Well said Lucas. As always, eloquent and insightful. It’s unfortunate that cycling is one of those sports where it often appears that first place gets nearly 100% of the glory. But don’t worry - we super fans are watching your team’s every move. We already know you are the best. But thanks for the reassurance anyway. Good luck out there boys.
When I say that Garmin had two rides on the podium and that Zabriskie is still the fastest man in the U.S. I jumped for joy! Really I did, you guys had a great year and show no signs of slowing down. Keep it up, and keep winning.
job well done boys! Keep up the awesome work you’ve been doing, and thanks for racing clean
Obviously, Garmin was dominant in Greenville as the results clearly show. Its not like Hamilton is some unknown new kid on the block and he has won some good races recently.
Great showing! Good luck the rest of the season!
Yes Lucas it was so so dissappointing !
But it was also such a Pleasure and a thrill to be glued to a crackly Internet link late at night in Rainy Lincolnshire England and watch this NEXT GENERATION of CLEANriders Tear the Championship apart..Proud to support you Blake,Steve,Danny Magnus Dave Z ,Tom , Tyler Dave M so many Fantastic riders all the ARGYLE ARMADA you are what has brought pride back to being a Cycling Fan..Thank You ! and all remember the Result is Not allways as important as the Process ..But when the resuts come as they are bound to (even the narrow defeats ) they are all the Sweater !

Those of us that are true fans of this team just love to watch you guys race. You are all winners in my book!!!!
I have to say congrats to the team! I know there was some disappointments but also some high’s this week. The sickness of Dan Martin, losing the us pro by mere centimeters.
But those pale in comparison to what was accomplished this week. Julian Dean 3rd overall in Ireland, he stayed strong as Cavendish faltered. The performances of David Millar, and Magnus to control the peloton. Zabriske winning the TT, with GC taking 4 out of the top 5. Then the road where we took 4 out of the top 6. It’s been a great week for the GC crew. That’s 5 podiums in 3 races. Out of 9 possible podiums GC took over half. In my book there’s nothing to worry about was said the threshold has been crossed!
Hi Lucas ! Yes it was Dissappointing!
But it was also a Pleasure even to be watching on a crackly Internet link late at night in Rainy Lincolnshire .

Lucas, Thanks for the race update. I so wanted to see Pate on the top step but two on the podium is awesome! When Slipstream stepped up and declared a zero tolerance to doping backed up with such frequent/intrusive controls we signed on to support you guys unreservedly knowing that the team wouldn’t take every race it entered. Clearly the team gave everything at Greenville. You guys have had a really spectacular year and we can’t wait to see you guys kick some more butt next season!
You guys are awesome! All of you! The whole team! I came to Greenville with my two brothers and we were fortunate enough to be on your floor in the hotel. We were all so awestruck it was hard to even say hello! We did congratulate Allen and one of the mechanics, giving him a well deserved couple of malt beverages.
I can’t believe that you were in the first big break, attacked the mountain and still got in the last big break!!! Geez, and Dave Z and Cozza able to give it all after those time trial performances……….sorry, not to leave out Tommy D, Blake and Timmy!!! Holy Cow! This was the strongest team performance I’ve ever seen on American soil.
I hope that someone can show Cozza some of the footage of him getting you to the final climb. Super Beast! MVP stuff!!! He looked incredible on the video feed!!!
Also, one last fun note, my brother has pictures of Pate’s hair from the podium on Sunday. They are quite special!
Thank you all!!!!
I just want to echo what J. Hartley, VDVFan have already put so well. You all did great and none of your true fans are disappointed at all! You all have given us, your fans, and the American biking scene a great gift! The Argyle Armada stormed the podiums this week and we are all very very proud of that as should you all! Yes we had a near miss and that can be heart wrenching, sometimes it may seem better to lose by minutes, but you were there and not just one guy but a small fleet of guys! 4 of the top 6 were there!! Once again thank you and congrats on a great week! I am looking forward to next weeks races….and maybe my internet…
By far, The Best Thing I’ve read in a while!
Sam Weaver, you had mentioned Cozza leading Lucas up the mountain and there was a video of it. Do you know where i could get a copy?
Hey Scott,
I was just hoping that someone was taping what was being sent by the moto video guys. I was watching from the Hincapie bus. They caught some great footage on Stephen. Just when you thought he might be fading off the back of the breakaway, he picks up 6 bottles and delivers them to Lucas and Dave…….THEN he goes back to the front to pull. He was obviously on the limit, totally anaerobic, fighting back the lactate, lead legs…..and still giving it everything he had. Somehow deep inside, he knew he could keep it up ’til the turnoff on Altamont at the beginning of Paris Mountain.
It’s some of the best footage I’ve ever seen but I have no idea who to contact. Versus??? USA Cycling? Medalist Sports? Good luck Scott.
