Today’s hotly contested 110-mile US Pro national road race championships came down to a photo finish with Blake Caldwell taking second. Danny Pate rounded out the podium in third. Lucas Euser finished fourth and Tom Danielson sixth to put four of the burrito boys in the top ten.
Check out this detailed race CyclingNews.com race report by Mark Zalewski for how it all unfolded.
From the article: “I think we rode really well but we suffered at the end from some little problems – I started to cramp and all the pressure went on Lucas and Blake. I was in the second group over the hill but we caught everyone in front and it came back together coming into the downtown area,” added Pate. “We had numbers with six out of 25 guys and we tried to increase our odds by attacking.”

I was worried about DP’s leg, but seems like I had nothing to worry about. Great job Danny! Would have loved to see what you could do in the TT.
And Danielson in 6th. An outstanding 2-day performance for TD with 5th in the ITT and 6th on the Road!!!!
I know how this is going to sound but, guys, you blew it today. I know it’s easy for me to say, but it just seems like all you had to do was sit in and keep it all together until the last few K’s and then attack the crap out of Hamilton and Louder. But either way, congrats on the 2nd and 3rd. I just made me sick to see Hamilton win.
Dudes, I’ll love you to the end of time, but that one hurts, bad. Glad Danny hung in for the podium, true grit.
damn….
Great to see Garmin-Chipotle be so strong at the US PRO. Excellent showing by Tom D. too; top five in both races. Your form is on the way back - good luck in Pennsylvania and when you get back to Europe.
Interestingly, no mention of TD as the best of the rest.
Should we begin the downward spiral of thought that Danielson is out at Garmin. It would be a shame but, not untoward.
First off, Ill probably take some heat for this but congrats to Tyler. He paid the price for his actions and has come out on the other side.
Now on to the Garmin squad. It’s an absolute shame that you couldn’t get the win. I’ve never seen a race dictated by one team (although a very large team) so well.
Blake should be wearing Stars and Stripes, as well as some other colors, in the near future. Pate showed why so many fans love his style.
I’d like to give a special notice to Tommy D!! It’s been a hard year him and to get 5th in the TT and 6th in the RR shows that has mid season form at the end of the year. Hopefully this will carry over into his final 2 scheduled races for the year and into next season.
Great Job out there gents, you truly are the class of American cycling!
Congratulations Blake, Lucas and Danny !!
All the Team rode FANTASTIC . Glued to a crackly Internet link late last night in England Dissappointed in the End But the guys gave it everything!! and ALL CLEAN ! Thanks from a Huge Fan in the UK . Good luck with the rest of the Season..
Look forward to being on the Road of the Tour of Britain with the Team GARMIN next week .
Give em Hell boys and wishing Dan & Chris a Quick recovery ..AC
I’ve read that the Pate used his press time to comment on the woeful lack of drug testing at nationals. Cheers for that, and to the two podium spots for Garmin/Chipotle.
Danny & Blake may not have quite got the win today, but at least I can believe their results. As a fan of the sport, that’s important. The jersey may mean something Tyler, but to us fans it will always be as suspect as his gold medal and everything else he ever did. Why? He’s never come clean. If he would just do what Millar did and come out with it we could all be feeling good for the man right now, happy for him to be enjoying success in the twilight of his career. Instead we’re wondering what he & Leogrande are taking, and if he’ll get caught again. A shame. Congratulations to Garmin/Chipotle for their CLEAN results today. Results we can believe. Maybe not the top step today, but with the state the sport is in the step you’re on is less important than how you got there. Finally.
I know you tried your best, but to let this one get away is pretty tough to accept.
Talk about not finishing it off. The guys have had a good year but this is yet another let down in a line (that is getting longer) of let down’s. Tour de Georgia, Tour of Utah, and now the US Pro RR, among others. I am sure much of this can be chalked up to inexperience and a young group of riders. Regardless, it has been a successful year and I am sure it will be capped off nicely with an overall at the Tour of Mizzu, which has a pretty soft field this year.
Congrats to Tyler and Rock. Those guys have put up with more criticism this year than any other pro team in the world. To come up with a result like that is impressive. And to think Sevilla was one spot away from bagging the Spanish national title as well. Anyway, its good to see them winning and also employing a great anti-doping program such as the one by Scott Analytics and Paul Scott. He was first class when he was COO for ACE and he is first class now.
Best of luck to Garmin in Mizzu.
I just hope the race organizers keeps excluding the Operation Puerto clad Rock Team so I don’t get to see that cheat race in the champions jersey…
Way to go guys! I remember when JV first started talking about winning not being the only goal, and I wondered how supportive cycling fans would be. Well, it only took one season to see how that’s going. Come on, let’s celebrate incredible results from a beautiful team. Let’s celebrate the teamwork and the power of the argyle paceline. Results, defined apparently only as first-place-finishes, will come, and indeed have already come.
I don’t know why everyone is complaining about this. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th doesn’t suck, and Blake lost by a hair to one of the (apparently) most doped-up guys in the peloton (and yes, I was one of those “I believe Tyler” folks early on, before there was just too much evidence to ignore). Whether or not Hamilton is clean now remains to be seen, but it’s hard to view his results with anything but a jaundiced eye. And yeah, Blake could have played it differently tactically and maybe gotten the win, but he’s 23 and was racing against a 37 year-old veteran. Live and learn, y’know. In a race where half the freakin’ field DNF’d, I think the Garmin guys did a damned fine job.
Yeah, yeah! You guys are great! You`re all clean. God Bless your pure souls! Down with dopers!
For those of your saying that Garmin rode a less than smart race…look at the math. Garmin started with 11 guys out of the 110+ in the race. At the end, they had a 1 out of 2 (50%) chance of winning. Last time I checked, a team putting themselves in position with a 50% chance to win a national championship jersey road a pretty good race.
Nice win for Hamilton, but we really can’t say anything too negative about how Garmin raced.
Was the race heartbreaking? Yes. But in the end The Argyle Armada mopped up the field!! WAY TO GO!!!! I have been dying with out my internet at home lately so thank you JV for keeping me glued to my phone with you updates!! I rock my Gamin-Chipotle shirt all the time with pride!! Thank you all for giving back to us! You all have delivered an A-Mazing team of new American hero’s!! Thank you!
So between this and the ITT nationals, is TD starting to get his form back? It’s starting to look like it.
