Our July Avid Argyle winner Jamie Naragon from Rossford, Ohio will drive for miles to watch “the nicest guys in the peloton…”
I’ve followed cycling for 13 years, and the past few years have been difficult because of the dark times of the sport. The emergence of a clean team, however, here in America has been very exciting for me. Having had the honor of meeting Dave Zabriskie and Christian VandeVelde (pictured with me) in 2006, when they left CSC for Slipstream, I became even more interested in the team. So, when the opportunity presented itself for me to work the CSC Invitational, I ignored the 8 hour drive, hopped in my car, and marshaled my first professional race.
When the boys began warming up, any doubts of my love for the sport that may have lingered these past seasons were erased. The argyle armada didn’t just pass me–they waved and thanked me for working. I was touched, so the next weekend, I leapt back in the car for a 9 hour drive to watch the nicest guys in the peloton ride the scorching Philadelphia International. The friendliness and passion seeping from these athletes justified financial costs incurred. Watching a race on TV or the internet is fun, but there’s nothing like the atmosphere of a live race—and Garmin-Chipotle is an integral component.
