Previewed as one of the hardest road races in Olympic history, today’s hot and humid 245.5 km course proved to be a race of attrition for the 143 cyclists who started the day at Yongdingmen Gate. Of the 90 riders who finished, Team Garmin-Chipotle H3O Christian Vande Velde (left) was 17th and the second American behind Levi Leipheimer, who finished 11th.
The more than six hours of racing were filled with attacks and breakaways. Canadian Ryder Hesjedal (below right) joined an early and very promising break that included Carlos Sastre, Alejandro Valverde and Kim Kirchen among other favorites. But the American, Russian and Italian teams eventually put an end to that adventure. The race came down to a six-man sprint that was won by Spaniard Samuel Sanchez.
David Zabriskie dropped out halfway into the race in order to save himself for the individual time trial on Wednesday, August 13.

So exciting see the Garmin boys representing the US! Great job today, can’t wait to see what Dave does on Wednesday.
My only question is what happened to the mustache? It’s the distinguishing feature I always used to spot him amongst all the other riders. Came in handy at the tour de georgia.
Christian, Julian, Ryder: Great job hanging tough to the end! The conditions looked utterly miserable. I just hope you didn’t sustain any permanent lung damage. DZ, wise move to bag it and hope for better air at the TT. On the bright side, after living through this you’ll probably be ready to crush at ToMo
Great job Christian!!!!
Very well done guys. I was pulling for all of you. Cannot wait for the track cycling events…. Go Taylor !
slightly off topic - it was hard to pick you guys out of the peloton without a million sponsors plastered on you, but the two tone bikes looked great, and seeing how proudly you wore your countries’ colors really put me in the Olympic spirit.
you all did us proud, in such awful conditions. well done.
Well done Christian. Great seeing you at the top of your game and climbing higher. Way to represent!!
Why didn’t CVV ride the TT?
