3 Aug
It’s August. We are now officially out of July and the Tour is in our rearview mirror. But what an amazing month! And it wasn’t that long ago that many people thought we just might spend July at home in front of the TV instead of racing the Tour. Given that, we ripped the cover off the ball.
We came to the race an unknown quantity. More than half of us were Tour rookies - a few of them Grand Tour virgins - with a few older vets thrown in. But look at what we did on our first outing! Makes you wonder what we can do when we know what the hell is going on. Hopefully a little or a lot more.
There are so many highs. Standing on the podium for the best team classification, a place I never thought I’d see again after leaving CSC. The team coming close on more than one occasion to a stage victory. Going for the overall, with an actual chance of standing on the podium. Being able to ride down the Champs-Elysees with Doug and JV. Watching Ryder and Trent get fawned over by their respective publics and celebrating double M’s (Martijn) birthday all at the same time. Then stopping for cold beers on the way to our hotel from the Champs-Elysees with the entire team (Dave’s idea).
All eight of us rode up on our race bikes (Danny was on mine for some reason) to a bar called Dada in downtown Paris. Champagne was on ice and the closed bar was kept open for us. Sweet. It would be the last time we were truly together, before heading to our bike crazed hotel. And as you can imagine, slamming a few bottles of champagne and almost a case of beer in 25 minutes made for a great last 2 km of the Tour de france.
Our final ride turned into a trick competition. However, we quickly realized only one of us could actually do anything worth watching. So we started skidding our bikes like six-year-olds through the streets of Paris. I can see you cringing at the thought of a bunch of skinny, kinda buzzed professionals flying through the streets of Paris, skidding out on their thousand dollar wheels. To the lucky few who got witness this amazing sight, thank you for not running us over. And also thank you to the mechanics who didn’t scold us afterwards.
Throughout the Tour, the fan support from back home was awesome. We read a lot of the comments, some of us more than others. I did learn that I can’t read the comments at night or else I get too pumped up and can’t sleep. But apart from that, we appreciate every last word.
Thanks for following us in our first year! Christian

Unbelievable ride! It was great to watch - now go win the gold in China (no pressure).
Congratulations on a great tour! So many of us watched cheer all of you on. Good luck at the Olympics.
Now THAT’S how to celebrate! Thanks for an inspiring and over-the-top entertaining season! Let’s keep it rolling! Kris
Christian were are at? Thought we might see you around Lemont catching alittle R & R before you head over to the Olympics. Better yet, where’s your dad been. I had a nice job lined up for him, but he hasn’t been around the gym!
Can’t wait for next year. Hope to see you guys in st louis next month
Hi Christian,
thanks for giving us a great tour. It was fun to watch you and the rest of the team animate the race. I hope you have time to savor the great result.
I guess next year it will be a little harder to fly under the radar, but it should be all the more exciting knowing you have a real shot at the podium. Plus you should have Dave Z back around to keep the philosophical musings coming.
Regards,
Chris
congrats christian and the entire garmin team… what an amazing first year, i can’t wait to see what the future holds for this team and the sport, as well
Christian,
Thanks to you and the rest of the Garmin squad for giving us such an amazing Tour to watch and for giving us so much hope for cycling. I have become so inspired by the Argyle Armada that I am trying my first road race later this month! at 35!
Congratulations to you and every single person working for the Team! I’m looking forward to the arrival of my new Garmin/Chipotle team kit that I won in the Versus fantasy cycling game!
Who was the one with the best bike tricks on the way back to the hotel?
Have a great time at the Olympics and we’ll see you in Greenville!
sam from Savannah.
Christian,
I stood in front of the TV and watched you and the team. My wife thinks I’m crazy. Thanks for a great tour. Look forward to seeing you again next year, but on the top step.
I’m only more proud :*-)
Sounded like a blast!! You all earned it! Good Luck the rest of the year Christian!!
Christian,
Many congratulations on a tremendous individual performance and for recognising the role fo the team in helping you achieve that. Oh for that spill in the Alps!
There is certainly a “band of brothers” air about the team that shines through in virtually every post made by one of the riders.
I am already looking forward to next year’s TdF when the team can really put on a show. You will of course become a victim of your own success and be a very marked man in the Grand Tours, but with the strength the team has shown and some of the others that will potentially be there next year like Dan Martin and Tom Danielson for the mountains and Dave Z to add to the already formidible pedigree for the TTT which may make a return, Garmin in Yellow is not out of the realms of possibility. Mind you, it might clash terribly with Argyle, but I guess the world will just have to live with that!
Thanks for letting us into your world this past month! It was so exciting watching ya’ll shock the world
I look forward to keeping track of ya’ll in the future!
CVdV;
Thanks for the great tour and memories. I must say, your team’s openness to the press plus all the great posts by you, David, Fresh Korn and others, really made the tour come alive. It was incredible to get a glimpse inside your hectic lives, and it helped all of us appreciate what your go through even more. Thanks for giving it your all, and giving us something to strive for in our own biking adventures and in our own lives. I can’t wait to see what you guys bring to the table for the rest of the year and especially the TdF next year. Good luck at the Olympics, and keep enjoying life!
JT
It was a thrill watching you guys lay it on the line every day. Congratulations on a great performance. The future of American cycling and Team Garmin-Chipotle is very bright. Can’t wait to see more.
No,thank you for keeping us entertained over the last three weeks,Christian.Well done to all of you and here’s to a podium finish next year.
Congratulations on a great Tour! You have given us something wonderful to cheer for and to believe in. You are an exceptional group - not because of your performance, which was spectacular, but because of the way you approach the sport. Even from the little bit that we can see on TV, the blog, etc, it shows. Don’t loose the easy going attitude, the playful spirit, and the thrill of being a professional cyclist. Performing gets you attention, but these things make you great.
All the best,
Stanley
North Carolina
Christian,
What a treat it was to watch the team all month! You guys really lit it up and made many of the “big” teams look bad. I wish you continued success and can’t wait to see argyle at the front again.
Those beers and champagne were well deserved!
Christian & Team,
Loved watching you guys in the tour this year. It was more exciting than ever. You make us proud to be cycling fans! Keep up the good work!
Hopefully we’ll see you in the Tour of Missouri this September, there are TONS of cycling fans here at Garmin!
Tim
No thank you for an exciting TDF this year!
I’ve been in that bar. Very nice.
Well done, all of you.
Some days we had to get up at 4:30 a.m. here in New Mexico to watch the Tour. You guys put on a great show! Thanks for the memories. Nancy McCarty
Welcome home to all…where ever that may be either Spain or back in the States. Sounds like you all had a great time on the way back home! I would have loved to have seen it!! haha! Enjoy the rest days you have earned!!
“However, we quickly realized only one of us could actually do anything worth watching”
Who was it, and what did he do?
skid contests in Paris. awesome!
Sounds like a scene, from a movie, Quick some one hire a writer, we have not had a decent cycling movie since, … American Flyers.
btw, Great job guys,
I followed you all the way,
Your and your team bring a smile to my face.
Congratulations to all of you on kicking butt at the Tour! After the past couple of years I thought there would *never* be a successful ProTour team who was truly clean. Both GCS and CHR have proved the pundits dead wrong.
Way to go, Christian!
Good for you! Thanks to everyone on the team for reminding us all that cycling is a beautiful thing!
Congratulations to Christian and ALL of the team! It was fun watching your accomplishments throughout the whole Tour. I think the team surprised most everyone. You showed everyone that a team CAN be comptetive by doing it CLEAN and having fun along the way. We appreciate that more than you realize… keep up the GREAT work!
Congratulations, Christian! You and the rest of the Garmin team were a joy to watch at the Tour. After having to explain to my 7-yr old son the Ricco debacle, it was nice to be able to point to you and other clean riders and explain that only certain individuals cheat - others share our value system and are worth cheering for! I wish you and the team continued successes (in both the standings and in the fight against the cheats).
Thank YOU all for giving us such a show to watch. The Tour this year was inspirational in a way it hasn’t been for a long time. Next year I know you’re absolutely going to blow everyone’s socks off. And an even bigger thank you for introducing the Frenchies to Burritos. I miss them when I’m there.
Christian, thanks for making the 2008 Tour very memorable for me. I can’t wait for 2009.

Thanks for the inspirational ride you and the entire team put on in July. I was in Elk Grove yesterday and found myself hanging on your father’s every word just to hear him say more about the Tour. Everything about your team is worth cheering. I think the expectations were set too low as you went into the Tour, now the bar is higher. Much success as you go forward.
POWER of argyle indeed!
I can’t stop laughing at the thought of Grand Tour cyclists popping wheelies and skidding out on the streets of Paris! (Please tell me someone got this on video) Your words conjure up the image of a group of kids discovering the freedom and absolute delight of riding. It’s truly refreshing to know that after all these years, miles, trials and tribulations, cycling is still such a source of joy.
Amazing tour! Can’t wait to see what happens next year.
Thank you for an exciting Tour! You and your team were my favorite part about watching the Tour this year. I will continue to support you guys. It will be exciting to watch you guys as the years go on. Congratulations on an amazing first Tour as Garmin Chipotle!
I wish I could have seen that!
Thanks for the recap of your pretty awesome Tour finale! I personally love the story of you breaking up the Quick Step train on the Champs and then watching Millar lead coming out of the tunnel! Look forward to hearing more about it all when you get back here!
You and the team are pretty darn amazing guys and I’m thrilled to read you guys took a few moments for just the group of you. I hope you had your helmet’s on after the bar though!
Thanks for even more inspiration C and Best of Luck to you, Tyler, and Meatball over in Beijing!!! We had a toast of good lucks for you yesterday at Elk Grove and hope you each have the rides of your lives and cherish the memories of your time there!!! Good Luck!!!
Congratulations to you, Christian, and the rest of Garmin-Chipotle. It was a pleasure to follow you all in the Tour de France this year. Thanks for making the TdF and professional cycling enjoyable for me as a fan again. It is so satisfying to cheer on pros that I can respect. Best of luck in Missouri next month. I hope to see the team’s representation in St. Charles and St. Louis. I can’t wait.
Great race, you guys. Sounds like you had some fun the last day. We can’t wait to see you back home in Colorado, and looking forward to good results at the Tour of Missouri!
Once again, awesome riding by Christian and the gang. You guys did an amazing job these last two grand tours from having the maglia rosa to yellow numbers…wow! All by a bunch of clean riders on an American sponsored team.
I can’t wait for the rest of the season and next year.
Christian,
This was my first year watching the tour and I found it absolutely enthralling. I found your sense of team to be really noble, and you do deserve the spotlight; you’ve earned it. If you’re back in Chicagoland and want a riding buddy, drop me a line!
Cheers,
Colt

It was a great tour to watch… and I send my congrats to the whole team… Good luck to you and Dave Z in the olympics.
I usually refer to anyone who tears tires up in such a manner as a “skidiot”. However, having just finished the TdF earns you guys the right to tear up whatever the hell you want!
Christian - you are also my new hero - not because of that TdF thing, but because I just found out you’re a homebrewer, too!
Great job done by all - right down to the folks who swept up behind the elephants.
Thank you so much for giving back the sport of cycling to the fans.
chapeau. well done. see you guys at the ToMO.
You guys F*ing killed it! Thanks!!
Great article. You givin’ Dave a run for his money?
Which one of you guys was pulling the wheelies? Sounds like a great time in Paris. Huge Congrats to all of you guys.
Thanks Christian! I’ll be following where you lead this team for some time to come - love what you are doing, all of y’all!
Thanks for the Great tour. It was amazing being in Paris for the last stage and seeing the team do as well as you guys did for the first Tour de France as a team.
Got some great pictures:

Congratulations on such a phenomenal Tour performance, and best of luck at the Olympics to you and DZ! Happy to hear he is on the team.
Um, like that other person said, no pressure, but you are on my fantasy cycling team so….
Also good luck with that air over there… I’m sure Allen Lim is already down with the neti pots.
Congratulations and best of luck in Beijing.
I can’t think of a better way to wrap up a three-week sufferfest than knocking back a few and ripping it up in the streets of Paris. It must have felt great to blow off some steam! Thank YOU and the whole team for lighting the fireworks at le Tour this year - this was only the beginning; the best is yet to come.
I know on paper they had to give the 2nd ITT slot to Levi, but the way you rode the last TT at the Tour, you deserved a shot at the Olympic course.
Good luck tomorrow!
You Rock, Christian! Look forward to seeing you on the podium at 2009 TdF.
Best of luck at Nationals!
