Steven Cozza doing the lead-out thang.
Today was a first for quite a few of us on the team. A lead-out train!
This morning’s short 115 km stage was basically ridden flat out the whole way. Many teams were looking for a sprint, which meant Pat’s 7-man group had no chance despite putting up a good fight. The plan for us was to assemble at the front and lead into the tight 3 km finish circuit. With 15 km to go, we put the hammer down, stringing the group out and giving our fastman Tyler and his leadout partner CJ an armchair ride. We kind of got swamped at 3 km to go by the fresher teams taking over, but CJ kept Tyler up there, who made good on our work and got 5th.
As I said, it was basically the first time many of us have ridden like this, and to be honest, it was a lot of fun. We’re learning all the time, but for a first shot, I guess it wasn’t bad at all. A nice little warm up for the TT tonight.
