VeloNews correspondent Andrew Hood talks to Christian Vande Velde after his 4th place finish in the final time trial of the 2008 Tour de France.
“I’m happy with my ride today,” Vande Velde said at the line. “I had Matt White and Allen Lim in my ear, and I had Dave Millar’s time splits, and those guys took care of me.”
“Of course I’ll always wonder how I would have finished [on GC] if I hadn’t crashed and lost that time, but at the same time, I cam here with the goal of finishing top 10, so I have to be happy with fifth,” he said. “Next year we’ll be back with a strong team and the plan is to do as well, if not better.”

The transparency from this team this year, and the fact that there was less clouds around you as well, made this the best tour for me so far. I’m a little younger, only started to really pay attention to the tour when Lance was riding, but my enthusiasm hasn’t been near what it was before this year. I learned so much about what teams do, what happens on rest days, ways to prepare, react, etc. Thank you for the education on racing, if nothing else.
Sign some climbers so Christian has some friends on the climbs…..
Great race, Christian next year you will WIN this thing! I feel bad for cadel, if he had any type of team he would have won.
Congrats to Christian and the team as a whole. What an amazing tour!
Everyone go back in time two years… now, who’d a-thunk they’d see CVV in the top five and a couple of young pups duking it out for stage wins at the biggest show in town?
What a great race… seven changes of the yellow jersey, a new sheriff in town for the sprints, and a rotating cast of characters on each climb. That’s bike racing, baby!
Great job to the whole team. I was glued to my ‘puter screen for Will’s daily updates, pix of JV out sampling wine while the rest of the team was working, and reports from Dr Lim about how parting your hair in the middle instead of the side will shave 0.0023 km/min off of ones time trialing.
What’s next? Can’t wait until next July…
I heard someone refer to somebody who was 100% above board as being “Chipotle-clean.” That right there, the fact that your name is synonymous with “doing it right,” is all anyone needs to know about the program.
Great job, folks. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
Thanks for such a great Tour! The entire team worked so hard and well together. Everyone deserves congradulations. Yay Christian! - a classy guy and a top notch TdF cyclist. A special shout-out for Will Frischkorn (- a definite ‘keeper’ in my humble opinion)! Can’t wait for next year.
Great Job Christian! You have made us all very proud. Thanks!!
This was so much fun!
Brilliant performance! At the beginning of the Tour, when everyone associated with Garmin-Chipotle was talking top ten, I though there was no chance for a new team with so many riders who hadn’t ridden the tour before. Happily, I was very wrong. Just amazing! I think I may go to Paris next year to see you guys win.
And, it’s great to know that Will and Danny’s breakways weren’t fueled by performance enhancers. Even with the four positives during the tour, I think cycling may have turned the corner. You guys are responsible for a lot of that turnaround.
Congratulations, Christian. And to all the guys on the bikes and behind the scenes. Amazing first Tour. Here’s to the rest of them.
You guys have now achieved Rock Star status, Christian is my new hero, Danny is the coolest and I could’nt not say good job to the Corn.
The team will be back next year stonger, faster, and better, I cant wait. The word is that the Jerseys will be available mid August, Its going to be awesome riding in the colors of my new team.
Thanks to JV and the staff for being so freaking cool and making this thing happen.
It was a fabulous Tour for the team, beginning to end. And your website became a real “must read”. So my only request for next year is to come up with a new jersey design that can be more easily recognized from the top and back in the midst of the peleton as seen on my TV screen.
(I’m not asking for Lamprey pink/purple, or Liquigas green or Uskatel Orange ….. but more prominent argyle and less white would be a lot easier to pick out).
And so now …. best wishes to those going to the Olympics, including those, like Phinney, who weren’t in France.
Christian, Garmin Chipotle, and Ryder Hesjedal (yay Canada!): you had this middle-aged fan up on her feet, yelling and pumping her arms like a loon more than once this Tour. Way to go, the whole bunch of you. Love the argyle too.
AWESOME JOB, BOYS! And to echo a previous post, PLEASE sign some mountain goats to shepherd CVV! Let’s take a lesson from the Lance Years–Christian needs a bit of luck and some skinny boys to take care of him on the hills and he’ll be atop the podium next July! Bank it.
Thanks for a memorable month!
Kris
Congratulations guys. Awesome display of teamsmanship and individual effort. Glad to see the arm pumping and family room dancing helped drive you on. Great job - can’t wait ’til next year.
