Lighting up the final ‘transition’ stage before the Tour heads back into the mountains, Julian Dean finished 4th in the final sprint into Digne-les-Bains. Kiwi Guy has managed to line up a series of top ten finishes in the past week but today was by far his best.
Also animating the stage was Will Frischkorn who was part of a short-lived 21-man break. While off the front, Will grabbed a second place finish in the first sprint in Saint Remy.
There were no major changes to the overall classification, though tomorrow’s bumpier stage should shake up the GC a bit.

Great work everyone!! 2 top tens and a top 5 for Julz!! 2nd in a sprint for Will and Christian is still holding strong in 3 overall!!! Good luck tomorrow protecting Christian in the mountains and then another rest day!!
Wicked work from the whole Team, the Train looked awesome the other day as u all tried to support Julian go for the front.
4th today! 9th twice already…! But hey Julz save some of that Kiwi power for Paris…!
Fantastic job today guys. Loved watching you today Julz. Great job!
Time for some armchair director - What would you do if you were running the show tomorrow. Pate or Maaskant in an early break, “Fresh Corn” protecting VDV but ready to pounce, Ryder or Lowe for a late bridge to the break with the intention of pace setting for the last climb.
Outstanding
Slept in and nearly missed your brilliant finish on the replay. The last three days have been awesome to watch. Best of luck for the rest of the tour.
Hamilton, NZ
Just brilliant today Julian. Best of luck for the rest of the tour.
Fantastic stuff Julian. We don’t mind getting up in the middle of the night in NZ to see you featuring in the finishes like you have in the last three days! Really enjoying reading your diary at juliandean.co.nz. Take it easy over the hills and have another go on the way to Paris.
4th of 158, Absolutely fantastic Julz, a powerful finish even after getting squeezed 100mtrs out. New Zealand is very proud of you Julian. Although you may have believed a win was possible, I hope you are still very proud of you own effort.
Now looking forward to the rest of the tour watch my new favorite Team.
way to go julz that podium finish is not far away. hang in over the mountains.

Go Julz !! Who gives a toss about work the next day when we see a Kiwi at the front of Le Tour !! Always looking for that black & white kit. Hang in there, any intelligent Kiwi is supporting you, gotta be better than watching the AB’s !!
Dan…can I offer an opinion as an assistant armchair DS?
A problem, I think with your idea of Pate or Maaskant in the early break is that for that technique to be effective in helping VdV in the later kilometers of the stage, then they have to be strong enough to ride once they are caught by the charging group of lead climbers.
I don’t know too much about Maaskant, but I get the sense that Pate only knows one speed…HARD. And by the time the VdV, Menchov, Evans, Schleck(s), Sastre, Efimkin, etc. group caught up to the early move, I’d be worried that Pate would be so tired from his early efforts that he couldn’t be there to help ride tempo and cover moves on the final climb.
I think I’d rather see Pate hide out for the first half of the race and ride the first few kilometers of the final climb like an angry beast with rainbow-stripes on his sleeves who’s got something to prove, shedding “down-but-not-out” riders like Kohl, Nibali and Kirchen.
Of course, what do I know? Regardless, the Alps are going to be fun! Go VdV!!!
So wow 4th that went pretty well, my mate taped the race so I am going to have to steal it pretty soon and check it out again. Nice one
Hey Julian
Awesome to see you this morning! Inspirational!
Both our girls (4yrs & 18mths) were jumping around in the bed shouting versions of go kiwi go! and bike! bike! bike!
It must be an incredible rollercoaster and learning curve out there. Look forward to seeing more of you!
Take care.
Hey, I’ll be there on Sunday, final stage of the TDF in Paris. Full support of our American riders!
