VeloNews talks to Christian Vande Velde about his stage 10 finish on Hautacam and being “…on the form of his life…”
From the article: “When asked what the biggest surprise so far in this Tour, he cited the troubles of Alejandro Valverde and Andy Schleck, but said the most pleasing is how he’s riding through the first half of the Tour.
‘The biggest surprise? To be third after the first 10 days,’ he said. ‘Tomorrow is a rest day and I feel like I recovered well from yesterday’s stage, I almost wish it was a mountain stage tomorrow because I really feel like I’m on top of my game right now.’
Vande Velde now heads into the Tour’s halfway point as a legitimate dark horse for overall victory.

CVV and team,
It’s still amazing to me that you guys are still not on most peoples’ radar, including some of the top contenders. Use this to your advantage and ATTACK!
I really hope you’re planning something for the next mountain top finish and hopefully for one of the other stages as well. Make them recognize you. Take some time on the others or at least try ’cause you’ll not gain anything by waiting. And you’ve got to know you’ll need time on Evans come the TT. Mark anyone within one minute and go with them if they attack before you near the finish.
Be aggressive! Attack! Go for it! Even if you fail, you’ve tried. It’s all icing on the cake now - or extra burritos for free. 8^>
You can be the 11th American on the podium in 11 years! You might be the 9th American to finish on the top spot in 10 years!
Now go out, eat those burritos and CHARGE!
VdV obviously has the right stuff right now. But he was in the first group and was still invisible. Some of the heros were left behind by him and the others. I would not blame him if he sat at this new level, finished the tour as the “suprise” and looked to next year to bring it up again to another level. However, if he was truly as within himself as he says then why not risk it and elevate himself to greatness. There is no glory without risk. Time to take a chance. Hit ‘em hard Christian!
Congratulations, CVV, Jonathan Vaughters, et al. It seems a long time since reading Vaughters’ journals in Velonews from his first days as a pro in Europe with the ill-fated Santa Clara team. I still remember him writing about hearing “El muy simpatico norteamericano, Yonoton Bow-ters!” from a race announcer as he crossed the finish line in a race in Spain. CVV has been one of my favorite riders since he was the last Postie to stay with Heras back when he was helping him win the Vuelta. I think, however, I’ll leave the race instructions to the experts, unlike the earlier comment by Mr. Knobl. It looks likenthe team is riding exactly how they need to in order to get the most out of everybody. Way to go, Garmin-Chipotle!
way to go Christian!! you’re racing with and better than the pre race “contenders” and you and the team are proving that american cycling is here to stay!!
All in good time ,Christian. Each member of the team has given best effort.
Hey, whada I know, eh? I’m just trying to encourage them.
Go at ‘em team!
GREAT JOB VDV!!! We are all cheering for you back in the USA. You and the entire team are making America proud. Keep kickin’ butt! Jonathan–thanks for putting together such an awesome group of riders. It is such a pleasure to watch them race, and know that they are all clean.
Good luck for the rest of the Tour!!!
