Proving his talents as one of the world’s best, Christian Vande Velde (right) stuck with the true Tour contenders over the Tourmalet and up Hautacam to finish with the new maillot jaune Cadel Evans.
Leaving Kirchen and Valverde behind on the mountain, Christian’s group finished just two minutes off Frank Schleck, who finished third on the stage and moved into second overall. In the last few hundred meters of the climb, Christian attacked, pulling the group up to the finish where Evans just managed to take the yellow.
All of Team Garmin-Chipotle H3O worked to keep Christian in position early in the stage with Trent Lowe hanging in until La Mongie on the Tourmalet climb. Early in the stage, Danny Pate crashed but was fine and still did his full share of the day’s work.

UN-FREAKIN-BELIEVABLE! I sat here in the office watching Chrstian fight back time and time again, cheering him on from the inside!
INCREDIBLE ride, Christian!
Goooooo Christian and troops! Nice cooperation
Fantastic Stage!!
WAY TO GO CHRISTIAN!!!!! I was once again unproductive today this morning!! Way to hang in there man!! Enjoy the rest day guys you have all earned it!!
Go Christian!
That was one hell of a climb. I saw the post race interview with Christian, who looked like a boxer after a fight with the towel around his neck. Except, this ain’t the end of the fight, so keep fighting!
Our new AMERICAN Hero ! Christian is the man ! Ok at first this year I’ve been glued to the Columbia Team but I think I’ve now found my man to watch with Christain kicking butt. Ever since Lance retaired I’ve been searching for the man to fill the void, I think Christain is the one to watch.
Were do I get my Garmin jersey ?
MP
GREAT riding Christian!! way to hang with the big dogs, excellent day today. everyone enjoy the rest day, you deserve it!
YYIIIPPPPEEEEEE!!!!
Outstanding ride Christian. All of Colorado and the US are cheering this morning.
Off to Chipotle today for lunch.
Keep up the great work.
Whoooooot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s about all I can say right now!
Vande Velde-licious! Forgive me, I’m delirious.
It was a privilege to watch. Rest well guys!!
Well done Christian that was a terrific ride!
Great ride Christian!! Keep up the great work team!
Super ride Christian and team!! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. This was an amazing race today! Keep it up.
Big up CVV! Put a plank to their asses!
What a awesome F’ing ride by VdV. Christian has a new nickname as mentioned by Whitey and Phil Ligett on the TV broadcast. VdV is the new american cycling hero and it is time to get him some team support in the mountains. Unbeleiveable ride. Must watch TV if you did not see it on Versus. Go Garmin/Chipolte/H3O?whatever. When do we get the new jerseys/kit. Get on Pearl Izumi to get those suckers made and out on the market. Yipee VdV
You guys are killing me! I am so amped up every day now that my daily commute has turned into a time trial! Keep it up, my legs have never been stronger!!!
Vande Velde… your legs look good… let’s roll… what a thrill!
Christian is a beast. He has always been good, but not this good! Looks like all he needed was a chance to be the top dog on a team. Keep up the good work and please dedicate it to a drug free sport!!!
Incredible, just incredible. And we know you can time trial, too.
I’ve been watching Christian closely for years, and have been laughed at when I’ve touted him in prior years.
He’s always had the talent, and I’m glad that Vaughters decided (finally) to give him the opportunity to be an outright leader.
Great ride by Trent Lowe today, too!
yah.. Why doesn’t chipotle give out free burritos for each day VDV stays in the top 3 ;0-
Great ride Christian! Hope the rest day keeps those legs under you.
Went to Chipotle last night for dinner, have to support the armada!
We’re cheering here in NY too!
VdV - all of you, really - thanks for such an awesome tour so far. It has been 10 days of brilliant racing and you guys a central part of that.
Hey, on Versus, you mentioned something about the pros of being the underdog, because no one expects you. How interesting.
VdV epic ride. Epic ride.
On a side note, it’s really hard to pick out the team kits in the peloton. We need the orange back!
Christian, I bet that when you look around and see whose asses that your kicking, a bubbling glow of pride, confidence and joy wells up inside you not only for yourself but for the all guys on the Garmin/Chipotle team. Trent, Ryder, Julian, David, Danny, Martijn, Will and (yes) Maggy you all know this is a team sport, be proud of your efforts learn as much as you can and share in the success. Congratulations all of you!
Great ride Christian! and to the team!
Enjoy your day off to recuperate!
I’ve been with you and your team since July 5!
Continue what you are all doing!
Great ride Ryder! You were mentioned by Paul and Phil today in the Versus coverage! Keep up the great riding!
You have many supporters!
Way to go Christian! That was just plain heroic out there. Sleep well, enjoy your day off and just keep on doing what you’re doing! Just remember on those long climbs that there are many out here back home behind you all the way and we’re very proud of what you’ve done.

Wow!
HAVE A DAY!
Wow what a ride!
Christian has definitely made this a fun Tour to watch as an American cycling fan.
What a day! An unbelievable effort by CVV and the team! You guys definitely are making your mark. This Tour just keeps getting better. Lemonters are proud. Way to go!
Thank you for such an amazing Tour so far!
My son and I have enjoying cheering for Christian!!!! We are proud that the team has taken such a strong stance to keep the racers clean.
GO CHRISTIAN!!!! all the way to the podium in Paris!
Wow CJ! All I can say is that was a very, very terrific effort today! I think you had a lot of people on the edge of their seats. Best of luck the rest of the way!
Go Christian! You rock!
I was teaching a cycling class this morning to the live tour and stopped teaching with 7k to go so I could keep yelling go Christian. What makes it better…that I know I am cheering for a clean rider. Just a great ride…stick with them till the last TT and then blow their legs off.
Great ride. You guys have really made this TdF fun. Keep it coming!
I am going to Chipotle for lunch and celebrate!
Hey, if VdV can pull it off, and get into the lead, do you think Chipotle will at least give out free chips, and maybe their guac? Because if so, I think I know at least 15 more people that will watch the tour intently! I love the mission of this team, as well as one of their main sponsors (that’s not to say anything bad about Garmin. I used to sell their products in college, and they seemed great, but I never bothered to learn much about them).
Great Job today Christian!!!!
It has really fun to watch all of you!!!
Keep it up!!!!
Awesome ride today. I think Cadel owes you a debt of Gratittude today. Your strong riding to the finish put him in Yellow. I think you should that in the coming days, you are going to be able to put even Cadel off the back of your wheel. Keep pushing like you’ve been, and Menchov, Evans, Schlek, and other others won’t stand a chance.
Great ride by everyone on the team. Congratulations!! Christian just seemed so relaxed and confident in the post interview, which is great to see. The Argyle cheering section keeps getting louder!
V-D-V… you are BAD-ASS!!! Dropping Valverde and Cunego? Who do you think you are?!? We miss Levi, but you’re doing JUST FINE. I hope you guys are coming to Missouri in Sept.
Amazing ride today, Christian! None of us should be surprised, however, including all of the commentators, based on the way we saw you climbing with the elite in last year’s Vuelta, with ease. Very glad you got the well-deserved opportunity to lead the emerging Garmin-Chipotle team.
Actually on vacation in Missouri but I watched the entire ride. Incredible!!!!!! CVV on VdV TV. I may watch it again tonight. A sunrise 30 mile ride in these Missouri hills had me primed for the mountains of the TdF. I knew Christian had it within himself to have a great performance. It’s even better cause he knows it as well. No more underdog. The post Lance posterboy. Way to go!!!!!!
I suppose all those french food snobs will have to add some hot peppers to their dishes after this Tour!
WAY TO GO!!!
Beautiful Job! It’s great having a team and a rider to cheer for. Keep up the good work! I ate “Le Burrito” for lunch in honor of todays throw down!
Way to hang tough - keep up the fight!!!
Phenominal performance by CVV. Sat on the wheels brilliantly all day, letting the movers and shakers slug it out and to go to the front in the closing metres too!
Looked to be cruising and able to handle the changes of pace which all bodes well for the Alps. Kep it up Christian.
Looked like Dave was having a bad day, off the back early on the Tourmalet and 33 minutes down by the end. Hope all is OK.
Great ride VDV, way to stay within yourself! To the rest of the Garmin guys, stay strong and focused. You are all showing the world what a clean well motivated team can do!!
Has anyone else noticed that if you say “VdV” really quickly, you sound like that R2D2/C3PO rip-off robot character from the 80s Buck Rogers TV show?
Awesome ride from VdV! I’m hoping that the rest of the team takes it to the next level too. They’ve been good, but now they have to be great!
SWEET ride!!!!!!!!!!!
Way to go Ryder!!!
Pulling for you man and hoping for a few more camera pans that show the 195 going strong!
Err, way to go! What more is there to say?
Way to go VdV…By the way the NEW FELT Team bikes look great.
The new FELT AR is definitely an advantage over the competition. It must add confidence to be riding the most cutting edge bicycles at the TDF.
Brilliant effort!
Time to take it to them boys. Go out and break their freaking legs off. All you hear is Menchov, Sastre, Val Verde, and oh yeah- Evans was interviewed and didn’t realize Christian was in 3rd place 38 sec down. That’s a good place to be. You know what CSC is going to do. So you guys have nothing to lose but a opportunity before you that will be historic. Believe in each other and take no prisoners. There will be no surrender! Time to ride like a bunch of wolves that are ready to pounce.
Hit ‘em Hard before they even know what the hell happened. IT’S YOUR TIME, Don’t let them steal it away!!! Oh yeah, Please pass the hot sauce I need some in my water bottle.
VdV - We Salute You. Its time to lay down the hammer and get a podium finish in Paris.
Beautiful ride, Christian! I don’t think I’ve ever cheered so hard at my tv before. The entire team has been amazing to watch. Keep up the inspiring work, boys!
Way to go Christian! You guys are blowing me away during this Tour. All the best in the stages to come. I’ll be watching.
Christian, forget about that talk of “riding with” whomever. This is YOUR race, man. Make those clowns hurt. Evans?!? please. He couldn’t attack a cafeteria line. Schleck?!? you’ll waste him in the TT. Menchov?!? see Evans. No pressure. You go out there and ride your race, have a blast, and the argyle will have your back. This is your time to shine so leave it all out on the road. You’ve already proven yourself, now the peloton will see it too. Best of luck (you can always use a little) and we’ll see you on the Champs.
Kick ass Christian. Amazing. I was cheering so loud my neighbors must have thought I was watching the Red Sox win the world series!
DUDE! Rock on, you badass mofo… we can’t wait to see you drop Cadel like a bad habit in the Alps and up on the podium in Paris. We’ve been big fans of you (and your Velonews diary) for years and are beyond stoked to see you killing it this year in Le Tour. Stay hard and keep lovin’ the pain.
