Danny Pate (right) and Julian Dean (left) made sure Christian Vande Velde (tucked in) stayed in striking range of the front group for when the race hit the final Peyresourde and Aspin climbs.
Rising to the challenges of the first real high mountain day of the Tour, Christian Vande Velde easily hung with the group maillot jaune (yellow jersey) over the Col de Peyresourde and the Col d’Aspin. Finishing with Kirchen in Bagnères-de-Bigorre, Christian maintained his 44″ time gap and moved up to third overall.
Approaching the day’s final climb, the Col d’Aspin, Team Garmin-Chipotle H3O had a strong crew consisting of Christian, David Millar, Trent Lowe and Ryder Hesjedal in the main chase group. As the pace picked up however, the group of 60 splintered leaving Argyle all along the climb. Trent hung on for the climb but ended up finishing in the second group while David finished in the third group back.
Tomorrow’s stage 10 will be even more intense as the race celebrates Bastille Day by climbing the Col du Tourmalet and finishing atop Hautacam.

Another day at the Tour, another great job by Garmin-Chipotle! Christian Vande Velde, sitting third in the Tour de France, I just never get tired of saying that! Wishing all good health and good weather for tomorrow, we know you’ll give it your all!
STOKED! Garmin/Chiptole is making le Tour fun to watch again. Thanks.
Valverde??? No no no, they need to look out for Vande Velde!!!!!
Way to stay on your toes, guys! Great job. I’d love to see CVV in yellow, if only for a day.
Great job, Christian. Who said a Chicago boy couldn’t climb!! Everyone is rooting for you here in the Chicago area, as well as across the country. Keep up the good work. Just 2 years ago, I remember you in the long break at the Tour of Elk Grove.
Great team effort today supporting CVV and DM. Was really impresed to see Julz still hanging in there supporting on the early to middle part of the Aspin climb. Would be nice to see the same sort of effort put into supporting the sprint stages
Way to go Christian! JV’s tweets arrived during church this morning–waaaaay better news than the sermon!
Impressive riding by CVV, keeping close to all the “big guns”. Today will be the real test as it has been a sparring match so far, but from what we’ve seen Christian can mix it with the best of them.
As for Dave, doing well to stay with the pure climbers. Dig in and look forward to stages where you can go for the win.
So good to see the Garmin boys still in there at the end of each stage. Keep it up !!!!!!
Go ryder go!
Go Ryder!! All of Canada is behind you!
We are pulling along with you all !!!!
