Stage 1 of the GP Correios kicked off in Alcobaça, on the Portuguese coast under very warm, sunny skies. The relatively flat stage included a 5-man breakaway that was caught – thanks to the work of the Argyle and two other teams – right before the finish. Tom Danielson and Tom Peterson worked to put Tyler Farrar in position for the mass sprint and he didn’t disappoint with a solid 5th place finish.
Happy with the final result, Tyler said: “The Toms (Danielson and Peterson) were incredible today. If it weren’t for them, I never would have made it back to the front after the last climb. They killed it! The team is looking good for the next two days in the hills. Should be fun!”
Young Dan Martin who finished just 27″ back is second overall in the best young classification. [We have Dan's Dad to thank for this bit of late-breaking news!]
Unfortunately Lucas Euser hit the medical car in the feed zone and had to abandon the race. He is okay, just very banged up.
